Thread Starter | Cut off of Arizona's new CD...
This is a pre-master cut of Arizona's song "Some Kind of Chill." Just thought I'd put it up here to give you effers a first peak :-) Hope Danny and the boys don't kill me...
3 piece band consisting of myself on vocals/guitar, Nicholas Campbell on guitar/drums/bg vocals, Alex Hornbake on bass. On other songs, our instrumentation stretches as wide as from Erhu (by yours truly) and Upright bass (Alex) to some really classic, beautiful piano and synthesizer work carried out by the whole band. We're all in our early 20s and operating independantly. Production is recording by Alex Hornbake and Danny Kadar with mix being carried out by Danny. Recording is being done in my living room, mix is executed at Brooklyn Recording.
Just a little bit of info on how it was made. Drums are a Pearl MMX, 2 toms, kick, snare by Yamaha, cymbals by the 3 big companies. We've got a D12 in the kick, a Soundelux ifet7 on the front head, a Gefell on the snare, Earthworks TC30ks on overheads and misc. dynamics on toms (we started using D112's on toms regularly after this track, don't remember what was on there for this one). Guitar is a Taylor 310, lead guitar is the same axe through a Carr Mercury mic'd with a lollipop mic whose name I can't remember... Bass for this song and the entire record was Alex's homebrew axe into the Wunder PEQ-1 using the compressor on a Quartet I. The Wunder DI eradicated our need for a pretty complicated bass rig- Epifani cab, SVT head... serious stuff, so that Wunder unit is a god-send (as it was on our first recording). Vocals are TC30k with no pop screen, straight into the Crane Song Spider, no treatment.
If you guys like this one, maybe I can post one or two more.

thanks bro
cool rhodes... I like the intro.
hard to judge the mix because I'm on KRK V4's and they sound pretty boring - but the mix sound good.
dAMN cool with upright... Is it the real thing?
The vocs are a little harsh in the high mid. but then again I'm on V4's...
Dig the music.
Thanks for sharing.

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
that sounds great!!
Love the music, but you know that
The bass on some kind of chill sounds lovely.
Second track is pretty wicked too... I like the general tone of the drums.
Thanks for sharing I was thinking about you guys the other day.
*edit*
I thought this had a Neveish tone to it, then I looked at Brooklyn Recordings site and they gotta Neve. Nifty.

Hey guys! Wild, I didn't realize that the thread had any hits, guess my eMail account is being a brat... thanks for the comments, Randy I'm glad you like how it turned out! Here's another one for a little more range... and ya, all the upright bass is real. We even have a chinese instrument called an erhu on the record, and everything is played by the band. We're really excited about how the album has turned out, I actually think these tracks on here don't even approach being the best or the catchiest!

I feel bad because you all haven't heard the whole CD (Kadar let me have a listen when he was in town) Arizona's work is truly a force to be reconed with. The one thing that bugs me is the transition from track 2 to 3, I have never been a fan of continuing a song over two tracks.

AG,
Oh man, thanks so much for the kind words. Wish you could have heard us in practice tonight- we've only had our finalized lineup (we're playing as a 5 piece, the album was constructed by our core 3) for 3 days now but we can basically reproduce the album, and then some. We've also added some absolutely insane instruments- chinese erhu mounted on a stand with a clamp-on mic, and another chinese instrument called the guzheng (sp?) which is a large zither, mic'd internally. We're kind of sloppy and awkward, having only played for 3 days now and having to learn a lot of this stuff from scratch, but it's the start of something amazingly satisfying. I don't know if you know the track names, but if you recall a song called "Somersby" we are just slaying that song now, sounds really great. Have we ever met? I'm sure Danny has mentioned you to us, shoot me a PM.
By the way, we've got two shows coming up this week- Thursday at 10:30 at a place called Scopa Underground on 28th and Madison and Saturday at 9 (open bar!) at Trash Bar in WB. Should be a lot of fun- they are just warm up gigs as the other 2 guys who have joined us have to settle their affairs in Atlanta before they can move up here permanently in April, but if you like the music, you'll probably have a blast at the show.

Copperx,
you haven't heard of us because no one has! haha, we've played a grand total of 4 gigs as Arizona, and that was with a smaller lineup that hadn't crafted a full-length record yet. We have one album that you can purchase, a great little record called The Sun and the Room that is only four songs long, but possibly one of the most magical sounding/feeling rock recordings I have ever heard. It's totally in its own universe and is the reason the band got together (we had never played together let alone written anything, so the fact that we produced basically a perfect musical statement in 5 days with no prep is pretty god damn amazing, lol). This is my first band as a singer, believe it or not, and we're literally just at the start of our journey. But everyone in the band is exceptionally dedicated to pushing modern rock music as far as it will go, pushing ourselves as players. We do everything 100% independently and take a lot of pride in what we do. Hopefully this album, in addition to the EP that proceeded it, will be the start of something really exciting. Our hearts are in the right places and with our new lineup, we're sonically capable of anything, so if the Arizona sound catches on, hopefully we'll be able to keep making records, playing out a whole lot more, and giving people around the world something fun and very deep to listen to.
Thanks for keeping the thread alive you two :-) We still have to master this puppy (Brad Blackwood did our first one) and craft the album packaging (which we take as seriously as the music, hey, we're artists) but Welcome Back Dear Children will be available sooner rather than later and I'll make sure to let you know how to get a copy. Since we're going to be selling them on our own at first, hopefully we'll be able to sell these things for reasonable prices and avoid jacking potential fans.
Oh, and you can get The Sun and the Room by sending us a paypal payment off our website, www.arizonatheband.com - we just ship em out ourselves. It's a great album, I'm obviously biased, but I think it's a great addition to the library of any creative rock lover. (edit: looks like we took down our paypal link, just shoot an eMail to arizonamusic@gmail.com with your adress and I'll send you a CD if you want one)

I'm sort of confused at what I heard last week if you all haven't finnished a CD yet... What I heard was a 13 song CD that sounded as finnished as I could immagine a CD, but you know maybe i just don't know the true tallent that is here yet. All I remember is track one was through the soot, and two had a line about a brown eyed girl, track 3 ended track 2 and then began with piano, then it sort of blurs. Probably one of the coolest things was how some of the sounds were reversed. Its not the effect that was so cool it was its implementation.
If i could describe what I heard in a couple of words:
An old style with the best of modern mixed in.

Everything is tracked/mixed, but we still need to master it and package it- those are the only steps left. Thanks again for the kind words, we'll be back to let y'all know when the CD gets physically available

Well, it's mastered! You can check out an mp3 of it in a different thread on this part of the forum.
Also, we're doing promo versions of the CD with some prototype artwork, etc. If anyone really is dying to get a copy, you can PM me for one - not sure if it would be appropriate to charge for one, but if we end up doing that, we'd replace a purchased CD from this run with the final manufactured one.
