Do you think this snare sound is wack?

It's a Pork Pie Big Black 14"X 6.5". I like the sound of it, but the real high part of the overtone is annoying. I haven't had a chance to hear it in the context of a mix, it might just wash out.

Anyhow, I'm not a drummer - it's for the studio, but would a different resonant (bottom) skin alleviate this if it becomes a problem in the mix?

Depends on the music, mix, other instruments, etc. etc. etc.

But the overtones PROBABLY will not be heard in a mix, but will be felt, makes the snare come alive imho

I really like the sound by the way

I think it´s more a question about how the drum is tuned..?

Here´s a song recorded with that snare. I think it sounds great!

Yeah I think your right Andy. I was pissing around with the tuning of it today and was surprised to find out it was the Top skin doing the whining.

Pork Pies are great snares. First, the drum needs to be tuned, but an even quicker fix is to put a small piece of tape on the drum head, which will deaden the ring. If that doesn't quite cut it, tape a credit card or a wallet to the head.
