WTF would you call this song? Rock? Pop? & How does sound? Is it marketable??

Recorded this last week at my home studio for my band. How is the mix and how does it sound? I need feedback, i know there are minor problems that i need to fix in the cleaning up of tracks, but other than that?????

Listened to the first song. Sounds good! I think the hi hat panning is a little extreme...makes the drums sound unnatural, but I guess this is a personal preference. The toms aren't really doing it for me...they get kinda lost when the band is at full blast. Like you said, there are a few little anomalies that need fixing, some clipping and whatnot, but that's about it. I'll try to listen to the others later on if I have time. What's your chain lookin like?

I suppose I would call this song "Emo," which is essentially "pop" nowadays. The sound of the times, I guess.

Sounds excellent. I agree with AlexLakis about the hihat and the toms. The hat's just too separate from everything else right now, and the toms could use a little more presence, but other than those two things, I'm digging it. As far as genre goes, I'd say emo or pop-rock. Good stuff, I'd love to hear more and some engineering details.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah high-hat and toms are panned too extreme. Toms get lost in the mix sometime at heavy points. When i first mixed it, i was worried it was too "bass heavy" and was going to cloud the mix. The 2 replys didnt mention anything about that so i guess thats not a problem. I've been really busy lately, will go back and fix the minor details soon.

Almost all tracking went through my PreSonus Digimax > Pro tools LE. I mixed in a sample for the kick and snare with Drumagog. Joe Meek Studio channel(outboard) was used on vocal and some guitar. (Not my fav, but that all i have to work with).

I would love to hear any other comments or quetsions.

How did you get the mix to sound really open and full. Your mix sound really open and my stuff sounds narrow. It seem like your mix goes out further to the left and right more than mine does.

Not sure what's going on with your mixes (and there's a lot more going on in Drummerguy's mixes than I'll mention here)...but one thing you might want to experiment with on stereo tracks is delay. For example, if you have two overhead drum mics that are positioned pretty close to one another...try adding some delay between them and panning them hard...you'll notice the more delay you add, the more seperation you get, and the more it opens up...The trick is (if you're looking for width) to get the most delay without clearly hearing two seperate hits anywhere (with percussion).

Also, you can make phasing your friend, and "push" sounds further out of the stereo field (you might lose some tone and mono compatability, but you might like it...) Weird science.

I listened to your first track.

It's very good! Nice work.

However, it still lacks the polishing I think you are looking for. Keep in mind that the tweeking needed I am talking about is something that most people on the planet would not even be able to hear - their brains are not developed enough as a musician. As a musician, the better you get and the more complex the music you are capable of, the more your ears (brain) are able to hear. Well that's my opinion.

Let's start with the vocals. It's certainly very passable --- however there are some notes sung out of tune there. Fix it.... and not with auto-tune.

The vocals, lead guitar and guitar are not quite in balance with each other. I'm a classical musician/composer not an engineer but I do know when something is off. This lack of balance results in a track that is not as exciting to listen too.

I'm sure some of the golden eared engineers will chime in and give you more specific audio fixes.

Personally, I would focus on the music and let an experienced engineer tweak for you. You have probably listened to those tracks 500+ times - you are too close to it now. Hire a new set of ears who is experienced.

You are 95% there ---- great work!
