Metal mix - Kick drum phase

Hi guys,

I'm hoping to get some helpful feedback here. My dilema is that I'm not sure if I should flip the phase on the kick. I've done 2 tests and I find them both to be interesting. I'm debating it out with my client, who is even more unsure, and there is no one else involved in this project to have an opinion so I thought I'd just ask you guys so we can finally move on.

please be gentle with me.

To my ears, the reversed phase kick has more punch and bottom end. The normal phase kick sounds a little thinner.

Given the tempo of the song and what's going on, i'd perfer the reverse phased track for the extra weight.

YMMV...

Thanks,

Yeah I'm thinking that too, however the inphase kick sound a bit more direct to me. Not sure still.......

My decision would also depend on if there's more instruments/vocals to be added to the track. In that case, I may opt for the in-phase kick for the "cut" - however - you could just as easily boost some 5k-ish on the reverse-phase kick to achieve a smililar result.

6 of one, half a dozen of the other...

My Recordings/Credits

reversed sound more clear to me, but I would add some low end in whatever you pick

If I wor you I would leve it normal! the inverted one sounds very hollow! leve the normal one but eq it to taste and at the end it will sound much better than the inverted one.

Yeah, that was kind of the feeling I had. I've played with the phase on the over heads, rooms, hh, whatever... but when they are all matched to fit each other, as well as the snare and toms, I have this issue with the kick.... not really a bad issue but I'm unsure.

Still unsure...again.
