Wow. Thats cool sounding! Production notes? Whats on the 2 buss? Are the drums sample enhanced...those toms are huge!
Sounds like Meshugga/Slipknot/Metallica in one.

production notes ? hmm...let me put it this way: my goal was not to go for that overly bright standart clicky-bd metal sound every metalband nowadays has, i wanted it to sound like hardcore(-punk) and NOT metal. i wanted to achieve a rough gritty sounding thing, with a lot dirt left in.

2bus is oxford eq native (but just hi&locut) -> waves ssl comp (about 2db gainreduction) -> waves c4 (compressed mids) -> oxford limiter native.

the bassdrum are 2 samples blended together (sub bass + usual kick sample), toms are mic signals with some ssl channel eq and 1176 on it.

enhancement - no, just eq + comp

The guitar sound is gigantic
The whole mix is great... I am in awe to be honest
How big was the room? Any details on mics/placement?

the room was not very big, maybe 6x6 meters ?

totally untreated and shit sounding :X, as i mentioned, it was their rehearsel room.

guitar sound is 2x sm57, one right in the cone and one at the edge of the speaker - pretty standart. also tracked the DI signal of the guitar before the amp (with a di box) and mixed in some metal amp room vst plugin, but just the low end of it (high cut at 400hz).

snare sm57, no bottom mic
bass via DI and some amp sim (can´t remember which)
2 racktoms with sennheiser e604, 16" /18" floortom with akg d-112
2x shure sm81 as overheads sm57 on hihat an ride.

and now the best: vocals with an sm58 with a self made pop filter made from a paper tissue :D.

.... the purpose of this recording was to get this band convinced im the right guy for the job and get them in the studio, which i think i have achieved.

Mate if you were based in Australia I would be getting in my band's ear about your work
We had a rehearsal recorded recently and this recording trumps it on every level imaginable.
One last question if you will... what kind of pre's were in use?

Forgive me for the metal reference. I'm old and out of touch with what is metal vs. hardcore.
Was the floor carpet or hard? High or low ceiling? Thanks for this.

love it.

the only thing that doesn't sound like sneap is the drumsound. the cymbals sound wired.. out of phase, or wrong Eqed.

the guitarsound is huuuuge.

very good work! now tell me that you are 21 and mix since one year, so I can get retired..

... you´re right, the cymbals sound weird, but that was really the room, kit was standing next to plain stone wall.....

... since we will get in the studio soon i was not after doing everything perfect as this was for free and i need room for improvement in the studio lol.

thanks for your comments!

I prefer the first version personally
The guitar is less defined but crunchier and kinda reminded me of hatebreed.

first version

the guitars were clearer, especially on the sixteenth note chugging. its a real good mix though, there are more mids in this one, causing the vocals to have more life, and the guitars to be more, well, full of mids and less scooped.

hey folks!

little update here: recorded the band again for a 7 inch vynil promotion EP type of thing, to promote the upcoming full length album.

they uploaded one track to myspace: http://www.myspace.com/theplatoon/mu...-77119816?ap=1

i apologize for the poor myspace quality, it´s pretty likely there will be an mp3 download, im gonna update the links then

despite myspace, i would like to hear your opinions

cheers
