these play fine on my macmini, BTW. but you do have to control/right click and save the files manually. they'll play straight from the finder in OSX or in itunes... don't let anyone tell you different.

they both sound too squashed to me now... listen to the cymbals during the trem GTR part at low volume and hear them pump all over the place.

train wreck.

I think both of these masters sound great. Having said that, the one WITHOUT the hipass (the smart) pumps a bit more. But its rock n roll, I like a bit of pump. I dig the RMS file better because it breathes more on the bottom and sounds more dynamic. They sit very well compared to something like the new My Chemical Romance disc which is just flat and squashed and unlistenable.

I would also love to hear some music you've done Aaron. You've got an awfully aggressive way of critiquing, not that I mind because like I said, I love these two masters, but it would be interesting to see what you've created with those ears of yours.... Hopefully we won't be hearing any train wrecks. Btw, what type of monitoring do you have going off your "macmini"

I was listening off a JVC ghetto, a real-world test... a lil defensive are we? My GUESS is that the cymbal pumping isn't the 2-mix compressor.. it's something else you've got going on.. monitoring chain IN THE STUDIO is a cranesong HEDD, meyer 2000 watt power amp, B&W hifi speakers, NS-10s, and a mono horrortone... but i'm not in the studio. Regardless I use the ghetto to check mixes on and know its idiosyncracies pretty well.. none of them add pumping where there is none and volume swells where there aren't any... it does have some peculiar holes in the mids tho.

Compression is great when you're listening LOUD.. i tend to take the opposite approach and listen quietly on something very simple like an auratone... big speakers can fool you with too much info and you'll miss obvious stuff like the swell at the end of the intro and the pumping. burn a cd and take it out in the car or something.. or try a boom box.. i guarantee you'll hear it in a different environment. it's real..

I'll dig up some mixes and post em here.. I'm kinda curious what the response would be as well... problem is rounding ppl up to get permission to post mixes.. most ppl are paranoid someone's gonna steal their song.

you're right in not believing me.. ask a second opinion.. try a different environment.. you'll hear it eventually.

No joke, that sh!t is so squashed that the stereo field totally collapses, and the whole thing sounds mono! Bleh...

There's no reason for anybody to have any trouble playing these AAC files on their Macs, regardless of the browser you use to download them. I get the same results Indie gets, where Safari for some reason adds a .txt extension after the .m4a extension. All you have to do is delete the .txt extension. You get an idiot light that says, "Are you stupid? Why are you trying to give this text file an .m4a extension?" and you just click the "no, I'm not stupid" button and it's fine. I don't know why Safari adds the .txt extension, but it doesn't make it into a text file. It only tells the OS which application it THINKS is supposed to open it. Even with the .txt extension, you can still open the file with another application if you want to. But deleting the .txt and leaving .m4a makes opening with iTunes (or whatver you set as the default application for .m4a files) automagical.
