Thread Starter | acoustic folk song with fake drums!
I'm trying to figure out how to over - compress the guitars and still come home with a smile. This is a demo I recorded this evening - old song dedicated to a girl. Feedback would be great! Thanks a lot!

Cool! I like the semi-distorted drum sound with the high roll off. The acoustic guitar seems different than the one I heard before, but I think it glues it to the other stuff. The rhodes sounds good! I still think there are a few small overdubs that you could put in: let's see--like a backwards effect, or some dive-bomb bends with your Juno. Maybe a subtle vibrato guitar that you can sample throughout?? How about a tamborine in the chorus? Ha, I'm just coming up with ideas while I'm drinking my morning coffee.. I think the song sounds great! Hey, I sent you some congas that I recorded. Check them out and see if they might work on this song. I hear the compression on the guitar at the end.. maybe put some other backwards sound to match that? L a t e r. |

I was talking about the mix at the link in the first post. I like the vocal sound on the original you posted and there are some cool effects in it too. It has a little different feel, so that's cool. You should post the old school mix too. Yeah, that one.

Great suggestions Kevin – and thanks a lot for the conga samples. I’m going to try those tonight, I’m going to do another demo of this song – the chorus is hard to sing I need something that helps my timing and feel. I’m going try to get a hybrid between the two songs. I like the flow on the second version but the vocals are better on the last on. I still think the chorus needs to be stronger. I would like to use electronic drums on this version because I want to finish it fast and be happy with it. How about the beat? I used the same loop through the whole song; I have no ideas what to add on the middle 8 and chorus. I want the arrangement to be pretty naked and simple. Thanks a lot buddy! |

Hey Dim, Listened to the last mp3, and I really like it. I´m sorry, but am not in the mood / position for creative suggestions today ( feel like empty can, ya know ), but don´t think the song to bee missing too much anyway. It seems of true creativity to me and is also onwarding and varying, not just patterned. I think that you made a really nice job and that´s not meant as just a compliment. Really nice and moody. Rock on, bro! Ruphus PS: I always wanted a banjo, and shall get me one finally.

Ruphus brother - thanks for the love! Listen to the other mp3 when you in the right mood. I have some major changes in the chorus - the first two posts are new demos - I'm trying to find the vibe and work really fast. I like the fast stuff! Thanks bro! |

I enjoyed all of these Lucky versions, with Lucky Master as a favorite. You've got some really nice melodic figures and textures sitting in a good groove. Your use of ambient environments on the master mix is real nice, as it plays well with the synth lines. I enjoyed the vocal treatments most on the master and new meaning versions. Listening on good cans, I can't criticize anything technically. What are the synth patches on the master mix, dim? Neat! Nice work here, dim. John- |

Thanks a lot for the feedback John you are a great guy and I enjoy your music! We didn't use any synths on this song - It's Wallace here on GS who plays the flute, clarinet, banjo, and mandolin styled guitar and also did backing vocals. Thanks! |

Hey Dim Light, This is the real thing! Really musical and some great percussion playing. The recording is crisp and warm like some home made bread. I am a fan! Okay now I'm hungry. Lunch time in these parts. Cheers, FB |

Dim, Listened to the other two. I liked the first version less somehow ( relatively ), the guitar playing, right side guitar out of tune ( could be the left hand playing though ) and the vocals not too sync. And if that is automated HP on the guit when the bass comes in then it might be a tad too radical. Digged the second better. Great kick, nice flap, nice arrangement, glue and stereo placement. Also like the snare type, but would maybe take it back a fraction of a dB. Nice pick noise on the lute. Also you seem never too bright or harsh nor boomy anywhere. Nice round and full mix, nice harmonies, nice room. Very nice work. Yet, the last mp3 was my favourite. Ruphus PS: I´m letting it loop in the player. |

What did you use to do the drums? Where idid the sounds come from? What in your opinion is the best thing to use for doing brushes type drums with the longer boomy kind of bigger bass drum sound like you hear in more rootsy and folky music? Also ride cymbals with rivets in them kind of sounds. IS there a paerticular sample library that is the best to use for this application? |

Thanks Ruphus! The timing is hard on this tune especially the chorus. I played around with the vocals – coming in a little late on the chorus, maybe it’s just a matter of getting used to the new world order! Thanks a lot buddy! Echo unit! Depends on what mix you are referring to. The first mp3 is plugsounds (vsti). The second one I used my own samples from analog tape and recorded the ride plus snare live. The last mix is a mixture of real brushes and juno 106 kick. I think the best sounds I have is the ones I sampled from my own kit. I know Scarbee have a great library with acoustic drums – I think it’s called Imperial drums. My best advice is to buy a real snare and record and maybe use a synth kick/midi etc. The cymbals are hard. I usually record the cymbals, hihat, ride live and mix with the samples. Hybrid thinking! My advice: Buy snare, ride, crash and hihat. It's nice to add real sounds and get your own room signature! Thanks! |

Sounds great. I like the vocals from the second mix more then the first. Drums could use a little bit more variation.

Atari thanks for the feedback, I need to spend more time with the drums. The first two mp3’s are demos and I use the drums for metronome. I will give the final version better drums with more tricks under the sleeve. John on new meaning I just sang the backing with a higher pitch but on the first mp3 I VSO’d the vocals with Big Ben. Thanks! |

Hey thanks Andreas G! I will try my best not to loose vibe -- I hate doing finals but I really need to change settings on the fatso - the guitar is way too compressed and I recorded without click! Hard to re-track. I agree the first one have soul/vibe. It's my song and me singing - I wrote this song to my ex girlfriend. Thanks brotha! |

Thanks for the kind words. It's a neat song! I like dynamics and the fact that you didn’t squash the heck out of it. I like the crickets and car at the beginning. I added those two guitar tracks (at 00:42)... another "rubber band" sounding guitar that flirts with the melody line... some toms and cymbals and a few flute tracks. My only suggestion is that a few bass notes get buried (maybe needs a little compression?) and the banjo gets a little wild at one spot near the end. It seems to clutter the tempo. Let me know when you get some keeper tracks. I sure wouldn't vary too much from what you have. Good luck with it!
