Thread Starter | A clip that may interest some... Live tracking with not much gear...
Heya. A few freinds and i recently took on a project whereby we set up a mock studio and had various musicians drop aound and jam while the tape rolled. It was all my gear for the recording side of things, which i'll list in a sec. It was all tracked live in one room with no baffelling or isolation... it was a toughy to try and get any decent results, but I think I got some halfway listenable recordings done. Everything was tracked to my PC through a Delta 66. Mics: 3*SM57, 1*SM58, 1*Beta56, 2*KM184. Mixer: Mackie 1402 Pres: Sebatron VMP4000e Misc: Sansamp Bass DI For this particluar track I had the 56 on snare, a 57 on kick, the KM184s as OHs, 57s on the guitars, and the bass was DI'd. The Kick, OHs, and bass went through the Sebatron Pres, while the rest went into the smakie. The drums were submixed to two tracks, and the guitars+bass were submixed to two tracks. When I mixed it I just compressed things a bit (well, maybe a little more than a bit...) added some mild EQ (mostly cuts) and put a tiny touch of reverb on the guitars. And this is the result.... http://members.iinet.net.au/~rpurse/...nk%20remix.mp3 (12M) Now, the room was terrible, the issolation was terrible, but the performance was good, and the sound is OK.... I think I won. For the record, the only 'composed' secotion of that peice is the intro. We knew that we were going to go into a reggae feel, but that was it. It turned out to be a bit of an epic. I hope you enjoy. |

I don't think the recording sounded bad at all. I do, however, stress the importance of a click track...geesh. I just got finished editing drums and time aligning thousands of little hits...so I'm really sensitive to timing right now...you'll have to excuse me. I need a drink. -Christopher |

Got to admit I only listened to parts as it's awfully long... The sound quality's pretty good, especially for the gear used. Performance-wise, bass and drums seemed pretty tight, gtrs less so, but not bad for a live impromptu thing. Tim |

I thought it sat together very well. the drums sound extra nice toms and all .I would comment on the guitars sounding rather un-dynamic in a sonic context.
