Mix too Hot?

Hi there all! My name is Fred and I'm a mixing guy from the colder parts of northern Sweden. I'm pretty new to this forum and I have to say I totally LOVE this place. So much talent and knowledge fitted into the frame of my 22 inch monitor! So please help me out here...Today I recalled the desk and brought up and old project just for fun, to find out how I would approach and
mix it today (Originally mixed this track 3 years ago).

I tend to mix very HOT ("Compress it to Jesus") nowadays, and maby on the verge of overdoing it...

Please have a listen, and feed me back some of your reactions...

Best,
Fred

Hiya Nanda!
Thanks for your input! Yeah I know.. a bit on the steep side..The snare is slammed thru an 1176 and then I run it thru the compressor on the desk channel. Also I tend to mix the snare and kick a bit on the strong side, making the slight mixbus compression a bit too noticable...

It's an illness...I just HAVE to slam things...wish there was a cure...

Thanks again,
Fred

I actually like the compressed snare. (Shame on me ) I also really like how the vocals are balanced in the mix.

I think things sound good. The snare could maybe stand a little less compression, but I don't hate it. I like my rock and so this is not an unusual sound. Nice job.

I love that mix. The only thing a little off is the snare.
Who are these guys? The song itself is really good.

Nice one Fred! I like pretty much the whole mix. I am not a fan of that much brickwall limiter, but it sounds good overall. The problem with that much limiting is that it really collapses the stereo image a bunch. It makes a lot of todays records sound pretty narrow, sometimes almost mono. The snare is just fine. Gott jobb min vän!!!

Awesome you guys...Yeah I'll ease back on the snare compression a bit...
Perhaps the 1176 AND the channelcompressor on the desk is a bit over the top...lol
See if I can find time to print it again later today or tomorrow..again thanks for all your love and feedback!!

Best,
Fred

I like how you mixed that, how you brought up the parts in the right spot.
Drums with the snare sounds very cool to me, great punch and drive you have!

Yeah, it's a hot mix but so is the sound

Super catchy pop, nice mix. Sounds very professional, good work.

Edit: Oh and yes, I think it's a little hot but I'm against the whole over compression/loudness war thing in general.

I personally would like to hear a little more kick...that's just my personally opinion. I like when the kick drives, but overall the mix is excellent. Translates very well.

this is a very good mix... me personally wouldn't change the snare.. im with you on the whole slamming aspect of it.. all the music i listen to these days and even grew up on has been heavily compressed for the most part, so thats what im used too. i would bump the kick tho up a tad but other than that sounds really great...

if you don't mind explaining, but what did you do for the drums and guitars as far as mixing.. i know a lot of people and even myself have a little trouble mixing them or getting that pro sound. thanks

Sounds really nice. One thing I would absolutely change is the hard-panning of the cymbals. I'm listening on Genelecs about 6 feet apart and when the cymbals hit, I'm a little distracted. Maybe its just me. Maybe its Maybelline.

The snare is pretty darn nice. Sounds like a CLA snare with just a bit more pop to it.
