Metal mix

Hi !

That's a recording we did (me and my former guitarist) last april in my home studio :

http://sylvain.raulin.free.fr/Test.mp3

It was done in only a few hours. We recorded that part quite quickly, after a jam session, so it's only a "beginning" of something.
The track levels are too high (saturation), because it wasn't planned to be a real mix but just a recording to work with to finally get a song, but we parted a few time after.

Guitars and bass were played by the guitarist.
Drums by me.

What do you guys think of that ? Please can you give your opinion ?

snare doesnt sound like it fits the style, reverb is great for the song, guitars too thin and bass not upfront enough, nice punch on the kick

you guys can really play, i think it sounds great for a quicky recording. Guitar tones arent my kinda sound but it seems to work for the tune. ( a little too chainsaw ish for my taste). I really like the snare too

Thanx Chris

We used the following :

Drums : Premier Signia Maple (10, 12, 16, 22)
Snare : Noble and Cooley Alloy Classic 14x4,75 (I used an Aquarian Terry Bozzio drumhead, not so tight, for the recording, which I found interessant sounding)
Cymbals : Sabian, ZIldjian

Guitar : Gibson SG Standard
Amp : H&K Tube 100 + Brunetti cabinet

Mics :
Bass drum : beta91 but we didn't use it finally (the sound you hear is a sample trig, which sounded better in that mix)
Snare : SM57 tom/bottom
toms : beta98 (10,12) ; MD421 (16)
OH : SM81
Hats : Oktava MK012
Guitar : SM57 / Studio Projects TB1
Bass : DI + Beta91

Preamps :
Mindprint DTC (OH, bass, guitar)
Soundcraft M8 console (toms, hats, bass drum)
Mindprint An/Di PRO 24/96 (snare)

DBX 160X on snare (love it ! )

All was tracked with an Akai DR8 (16 bits).

It sounds a little thin, we did some mistakes... Bass sound was terrible, so we had to make it very low in the final mix, but overall the global sound fits well the parts, i'm quite happy with it.

We now use a MOTU 2408 which has better converters, Brauner Phantom, AKG 414 ULS, etc ...
I recently ordered an API lunchbox + 1 x 512b mic pre (and 2 more 512c next month), I hope it will make the drums/guitars/bass sound bigger !!

The only thing that bothers me is the snare sound. I think it could use a bit of high mids. Or maybe ad some distortion to it. The kick could use a little bit more sub I think. The rest sounds great to me!
I'm wondering how a vocal would fit in there.
