Thread Starter | Hey all, This is a pop-punk/pop rock song i am working on. Just want to know what people think could be changed in this mix. It's not complete, but its getting there... lemme know what you think. http://www.mediafire.com/file/0zonktdnzyn/Project (Kristen Jaudon) Test 1.mp3 Thanks! |

| First off, great song, it must be a pleasure working with it. Anyway, I'll just line up what I think and would have done different. There is clipping through more or less the entire track, so check that out before you'll master it. Snare - Is there like an "artsy" reason for it being panned to the right? It is also kind of wet with room/reverb also. Kick - A bit thin for my taste but most importantly, it sounds "damaged" sometimes (mostly in the chorus). Toms - Same as with the snare, but this time, all of them panned left. Cymbals - Maybe a little bit louder in the chorus? Also a little more panning too. Bass guitar - Depending on the recording of it, a bit more around the 1-3khz area? It has a problem with clipping sometimes too. Guitars - These need some fixing in the automation. Like in the first chorus, the guitar panned left is very prominent while right is barely there, but then its completely opposite in the second chorus. But as before, artsy reason? Vocals - Maybe more presence like around 1,5khz - 4khz. Its too much sibilance sometimes and if possible, some boost in the lower frequencies(not in the pre chorus though). It also sound like there's a filter of applied low-mid on the whole mix, maybe it's a bit too muddy. Anyway, these are just my 2 cents. Keep us posted! |

Thread Starter | Yeah man, thank you. This is a class project. This mixdown was more for personal practice for before i go in to the studio and do the final mix for the project. I tracked this to tape, and then transferred it to protools, and i think i may have screwed up a lil during my tracking and sent some things a lil to hot to tape. Maybe a tape calibration problem as well? Not too sure though, it was my first tape cal ever. haha. I also had the pleasure of overdubbing drums rather then tracking the rhythm section first. So that was definitely interesting. I totally agree with the automation adjustments, I'll have to make sure to mess with that a little more. The Vocals really need a lift. I am at the disadvantage of not having studio monitors so when i tested the mix on other speakers I noticed many of these things. I'm gonna be in the studio on the 13th so i should have a better monitored mix down. Thanks for the advice! Keep it comin! And yes, the song is a pleasure to work with! |

| when I listen to the song it sounds like I am listening through a pillow (to some extent). The mix just needs to be cleaned up. Keep working on it. |

| Gear nut | I love the song and the individual sounds, but the levels seem to be all over the place. The left guitar overpowers everything, and the vocals are almost buried by it all. The whole mix could also do with some more brightening up, it sounds like you've put a low pass on the whole track on mixdown. |

Thread Starter | Yeah i agree. I've been working on it. My problem right now is the lack of studio monitors. I have been testing my mix on other speakers, and i can definitely notice all of the things listed above. Friday I will be going into the studio to do a mix on this. I'm planning on making the adjustments needed there. I will also be working on my personal mix (the ones above) to make it sound as good as I can. Thanks for the responses! Keep em comin. |

Thread Starter | Here is the most updated mix I have of this song. I finally had a chance to get back to it and mess around with it a little. I also added some harmonies! Let me know how you think this sounds! You Make It So Easy (Kristen Jaudon) (Final 1).mp3 |

| Listened to the latest upload. Did you check your mix on low level? It's pretty obvious the vocal is too much muddy mids there, it sounds like the vocal has been recorded and left untouched. Similar things going on the other tracks, they sounds pretty muddy, or lack of presences. Perhaps you can tell us what you did to the track? So we can further identify what's wrong with the process...
