First Mix of First Track

Hey Ya'all,

This is the first mix of the first tune off our new album. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. (See revised mix below)

What kind of processing and effects do you have on the drums now? How many tracks are on the drums and what are they?
All and all it is pretty good, but you might want to work on the drums a little. They just need to be tightened up.

Drums are as follows:

D112 on Kick
RE-20 on Snare
SM57 on Rack
MD421 on Floor
Rode NT5 on OH (Spaced Pair)

I am using some PSP Vintage Warmer on the kick, snare and OH's
and IR-1 for verb.

I was kind of going for a old school drum vibe, but I don't want muddy. What ya think?

I think the bass mess up the vibe - sounds like midi? And the song has no 3D spread - other than that - I like it! I would do something cool with the horns - maybe a delay or a naked lady with a hat holding two Auralex widescreens yelling - I love jazz!

I can see Ethan Hawk driving by in a Volvo strumming a pink les Paul - in syncope’s!

Nice vibe and feel…

Hmm, no the bass is a 75 Fender Jazz through a Ampeg Portaflex. What, too thin? I might spread the stereo image a bit more as well.

To my ears the bass is too stiff and sounds like you edit it, you know put things right on the grid . I like the bass more loose from the balls!

Other than that I really like the music... The mix could be better though! Hard to give you more feedback - I think it sounds 2D and a little lifeless.

Which tracks did you use high-pass filters on? (and low-pass?) I think the tune needs to be a little brighter. I've noticed that with a lot of successful mixes that the solo instruments are framed with contrasting frequencies, like a lead guitar might be a dark Clapton 'woman tone' surrounded by sparkly rhythm guitars, or vice versa- a bright lead instrument surrounded by darker instruments. The second a solo begins, a lot of the background mix should change to highlight the solo. It can be done in a subtle way. Personally I would make the drums a little lower in the mix while brightening the high-hat and ride. I could be wrong, but I'd make the overall mix a tad brighter. Disclaimer- these are my amateur opinions. BTW, I really like your style of music.
