New Pop/Rock Song - "The Girl Who Stole The World" - Mix suggestions please.

Hi guys,

Have just finished a new song "The Girl Who Stole The World" - it's available on the player at www.onedaylife.co.uk

Just looking for any suggestions to improve on for next time. I feel I had problems getting the verse, bridge and chorus to sit together, they sound a little disparate to me. Any pointers on that?

Song was recorded with Cubase SX and a Presonus Firepod. Mics were SM57's, Rode NT1-A's and vocals were recorded on an SM57 and an Audio Technica AT2020. Drums are a mixture of acoustic drums and Roland V-Drums. Mixed on my Alesis M1 Mk 2's.

Thanks,

Max.

Be careful with your highs. I don't think you gave them quite the critical listen they needed. They're coming through very harsh, and I believe this is at the sound source - which was probably subtle until it hit the mix compression which made em pretty rough.

Consider that the very high highs and the low lows are the hardest parts to properly gauge because that's where our ears getting a little shaky. Be very selective about these areas because they are going to be the hardest to fix downstream. Your midrange will be most apparent to you as to whether or not it's "working," but don't be afraid to be a bit on the critical side of the highs and lows. General rule of thumb: "defined" for lows, "smooth" for highs. You have all the hard transient you need in your upper mids

Thanks for the reply, I am tracking this weekend so will try and bear the very high and low in mind when listening.

More feedback still welcome from everyone, thanks.

sm57s, Rode NT-1s, and at2020, all have particular quirks in the high range..... placement is going to be EVERYTHING with these mics. Definitely read up on your mic placement. 57s have decent highs, but they are exaggerated. NT-1s have brittle highs. AT2020 has decent highs, but they are somewhat thin and don't take to eq particularly well in my experience.
