Something different for me. ITB mix.

Hey guys,

This is a song I wrote, recorded and engineered by myself maybe 3 months ago. It's A LOT different than the stuff I do in my band (Hard Rock/Metal).

I had some fun, running the drum machine through a vocal harmonizer and making ample use of some freebie tape delay plug I found online.

I'm curious to hear any comments on production, and the song itself.

Hey Norman,

very nice song and what a vibe! I like this effect on your vox but I'm not sure if I'd leave it there for the hole song. I think I'd vary it with a different effect from time to time or may be I'd pull the effect a bit down when you sing more intimate parts, to bring up your voice more closer, more in front then ... just a thought :-)

Yeah good song - I agree about the vocal effect - I would shorten the tail a little and also bring in something with more focus - Like the tremolo guitar - make it more dry, maybe? Just a thought. The velocity on the hihat is a little flat -

However, i'd leave the delay on all the way through... it is real nice and quirky...

I would react to the old school vocal sound and set up a more natural drum set, at least bring hh, snare, and bd together in the same acoustic space. the hh is standing out (ack to the message above), though the effect is a good idea. I would choose the typical short-delay pattern of the mix as the acoustic space for all drum tracks and the vocals (with similar intensity) and then add individual effects to particular tracks only as a flavor, as the long reverb for the vocals, and perhaps the same reverb in particular moments to the snare (automation up-down).

Being that you can actually sing...

I would raise the vocals another db or 2 and take the delay off on the vocals chorus for variety.

I would also lower the hi hat and raise the rest of the kit.

The mix sounds overall a bit thin. Could use some more bottom end (bass).

The delay on the gtr. solo is too much.

On a songwriting level: I really like the song!

Thanks for the comments Ernest.. I agree with your suggestions. I think I was taking a few risks with the production and maybe they didn't quite pan out!

Either way, it was a fun song to write and record.
