2 hours wow! Did you ever try any summing units, if so what are your thoughts?

I never tried a summing unit so I have no opinion on that. I did heard some examples posted on this forum though but I can't pronounce based on that. I have a friend that swears that his summing unit changed his life. IMHO, compression is still the one thing ITB can't beat OTB and that's why I bought the API 2500. I rented it 3 times to test it before buying it.

Luctellier, first really nice work on your mixes ! I really like how you get those slamming drum tracks. We use Cubase and I am interested in whether you use a PC or Mac (we have Mac Pro Quad 8GB RAM). We occasionally get pops and crackles ( our converter is a Lynx Aurora) when we have a lot tracks and I was wondering if it ever happens to you. I am thinking you may be on a Mac since you use MOTU converters, are you firewire attached ?

Last congrats on your API 2500 ! We have one too and a little known fact that I don't know if you are aware is that you need to purchase and install a battery to retain your settings when you power down the unit. In case you didn't know, here's a thread (see post 47 I think from API admitting their screw up). The batteries are cheap and easy to install.

Beloved API 2500, minor pet peeve

Hey man,

I work on a PC Intel Dual Core 2.4GHz RAM 2GB with Windows XP Pro. Do you get pops and crackles during tracking or playback? What operating system are you using? I never had any problem with the MOTU except when I updated to SP2. My MOTU always went out of synch and I found later that I just needed to replace the firewire drivers and files with the previous one included in the cab files from SP1 and it fixed the problem. My CPU is never used more than 40% when I'm mixing with all the plugins activated and I set my buffers to 128 when I'm recording and 512 when I'm mixing most of the time. Sometimes I need to set them to 1024 when working on bigger projects.

Thank you so much for the info regarding the API 2500! I finished a mix yesterday and turned off the API before going to lunch and noticed when I came back and turned it back on that the settings were lost. I felt stupid but fortunately I had written the settings in case they would be a recall. Glad to know I just need to purchase a battery!

It sounds like you're getting close
to being able to mimic CLA, Ben,
etc. decently.
I'd save up for an SSL.

He's saying that your mixes are just as good as the pros you like, so you should start saving up for an SSL console.

It's the 'mimic' part I'm not sure! Mimic is not a good term down here!

Mimic? The only thing that sounds remotely close to CLA's trademark sound is the in your face compressed vocal sound. Luc has developed his own sound and, in my opinion, that's the hallmark of a truly great mixer.

Luc, as usual, great job!!
You're destined for great things my friend.
