This has some of the sonic hallmarks of an auto-tuned vocal. (tip: tuning artifacts seem to be easier to hear when you listen to a vocal at lower levels). If you listen for words like the step down

"Maa ..aaa...ade"

and the following "Ohs" sound auto-tuned. The thing is, I've recorded more than a few vocalist that, when employing a very fast or shakey vibrato can sound very close to an auto-tuned singer. Might be the case with this girl... but I still vote "tuned"!

long sustained notes not falling towards the end are very suspicious...

In the beginning I was unsure...but the Ma-a-ade and Ooohs are definitely tuned.

NOT?

I made a record back in 2000 on ADATs. When going back and listening to it a couple years later, I had to remind myself that the vocals were not tuned. They couldn't have been. I didn't yet know how to tune or even own a computer. Yet, sometimes his voice sounded like Cher-Bot. That being said, I think all too often, people mistake the robot effect for Autotune. Where you can really hear it is when people have wicked vibrato. (Which might be part of the recent obsession to sing through your nose with no vibrato at all ). I do hear some Autotune on the latest Better Than Ezra, and believe it or not, the latest Mark Knophler.

The trick, I think is to graphically tune lines. And on lines that have vibrato, make a curve and move the whole thing up or down. Straightening it out is what causes that sound. That's why automatic mode sounds like that. Because it doesn't descriminate against vibrato.

Record rap-rock and you'll never have to autotune again!

its sounds AT'd, the words "ever" and "made" sound like dead give aways. however with the aboundent use of autotune in all styles of music today, people are begining to imatate the sound of auto tuned vocals in there performances. in particular the choppy move from note to note in a singal word. i had a session the other day with a girl who was singing like this, when she was asked why she said "thats the way Shania Twain sings, it must be right"

ps we need a smiley of a shaking head.

Yes. 'ever had' and 'made' give it away.

But then again, I have recorded singers that have that 'auto-tune' sound on their voices in spots naturally.

Definitely autotuned. It even sounds like you put in some artificial vibrato, but that might also come from too fast tracking and/or tuning.

The sibilance disturbs me more however...

Greetings,
Dirk

I just tracked a band last week with a girl who sounds alot like Shirley Manson, there's one section where I checked repeatedly if I had AT on it, her voice just sounds like that.

No question about it, but to be fair, everyone who was listening was listening for auto-tune, so this doesn't mean it would be noticable to anyone off the street.
