Alt/Rock and Roll Mix...Advice needed.

Just recorded this a few weeks ago. I would like some outside ears to take a listen to my mix so far. It's instrumental, we're rerecording vocals next week. Let me know what my problem areas are! Thanks a ton!

what gear was used?

Hi there,
First off i'd like to say that there is some Excelant guitar work on this track. there are no performance related issues here. The constructive critisim i can come up with is that there is some dull-ness going on in the high frequencies. to be specific, i like to hear brighter Snare/cymbols and guitar. bass is nice and low and out of the way. Am i corrert to assume that you used a buss compressor/limiter with fast/fastest attack? I think it would sound a little more natural with more transients getting through.

i only compaired this track to one of my own recordings that i posted up here yesterday, and through earbudz. yours is so radically differnt from mine, so maybe i shouldn't compair the two.

I also don't care for the reverb choice on the snare, but that is a matter of taste i guess. thanks. the song is still a jam.

I agree with Mildew, the playing is superb, but the mix is very flat.

Boost the guitars a bit in the high end and bring them back to life!
The drums could do with a little of the same treatment, and possibly come up a bit.

I really liked the song though, awesome playing once again

Yeah, they are very good. I tracked em live, no click, with vocals as well(guitar player sings and plays at the same time!! Dude is crazy good. He threw up a double after we tracked) but the vocals had an excessive amount of bleed, so I dropped them for now. I'll work out the kinks you guys suggested and i'll post another mix in a couple of hours. Thanks so much for the input!

Oh, and the gear I used was as follows

Kick-421 through API pre
Kick Out- AT4047 through API
Snare top/bottom- 57 through API
Toms went directly through the SSL with 421's
Overheads were Rode NTK's through Summit pre

Bass was DI, running through the Ampeg plug-in

Guitars were 57,421, and a Fathead running through the SSL

Mixed entirely in the box

I agree that the cymbals need to shine, the guitars could use some hi end and the bass could use just a little more hi-mid definition...the song is pretty killer though.

Here's about 30 minutes worth of tweaking. I think the cymbals might be too loud and the rest of the drums might be too low in the mix. Your guys' thoughts?

nice

Hi,
Listened to the newest mix, and compaired to yesterdays, it is going the right direction. i cannot think of anything more to improve. the drums have great tone, and the snare 'verb is more pleasing . also, you've fixed the guitar.

my mixing knowledge is limited, so i'd say get your vocals in there and you'll be good to go!

The whole mix is significantly louder than yesterdays', fuggin' rocks. you've got a keeper on yer hands.

I'm not a bid fan of the tinny snare sound and it's reverb. I like how you brought up the guitars and made the drums high end a little bit more noticeable. Good work.

Is it the snare itself you're not a fan of, or the way I processed it?

Sounds good to me, untill you have the vocal in its hard to say, maybe, but just maybe the bass needs to come up tad.
