Progressive metal track - new mix

I posted this track up here about 4 months ago. I'm still a complete amateur but since then I've been working a lot on other stuff, learning the ropes through experience and feel I've picking up loads of useful tips from the guys on here.

Check it out - I'm really happy with the way it's sounding, just wanted to see what people thought of what I've done and the track itself (its my band!). This was recorded in December and I only came back to it last week - no vocals at the moment but if people are interested I'll post a new version when its all finished!

Well played but is seems obvious you tryed mastering this track and I think it didn't do any good to your mix. It sound very thin (seems you want a loud master but even for that it sounds thin and mids, highs aren't well balanced).

If you post the unmastered track here it would be easyer to comment on the mix and being able to give small mastering tip too.

yeh, it sounded so much better before I mastered it. I just used the multi-band comp and the limiter in ozone but I wasn't trying to get it loud...although its reading -8.5 on the RMS meter! I never usually master, I just like the limiter in ozone.

I'll post again with another version. Thanks for commenting - hope you like the track!

Hey Joey. The guitars were recorded DI through a radial J48 with amplitube as an insert. They were reamped using a radial x-amp into a Fender 5150 mk3. No overdrives pedals - just straight in. Brought back the gain quite a lot for the intro, chorus and solo rhythms. Cranked the gain, mids and presence for the solo. Can't say enough good things about that amp - I even prefer it to the first peavey 5150.

For the heavier/faster parts - just compressed the low mids with the sonalksis CQ1 and added a touch of presence.

Thanks for checking it out - hope you like the track!

Hey, cool stuff? Do you have any links to anything else you've done?

BTW, if you're into prog, I'd love to know what you think of the piece I posted here:

i would thicken up the guitars maybe... add a less distorted guitar dub just to bring in a little more depth...thats my 2 cents... good job !!!

I think next time we'll quad track (on each side). My bro is the guitarist and he uses almost all down-strokes so that should sound really big if its super-tight! Thanks again for listening!

Ilistened to the track with headphones...and I could hear a bit much of thr reverb trail on the snare, and I think there should be a prominent bass line and the overhead definitely need to come up...Metal songs need hihats and crashes...by the way, how did you pan your toms?

yeh...reverb might just be a difference in taste. It's just D-verb, plate, 1.6 second decay and no pre-delay. Its on an aux which is mixed in quite high - like it wet

Toms are panned about 88 on each side. I kept them entirely natural and they just didn't feel right panned hard L/R. I mix drums from crowd perspective - hate drummer perspective, personally.

The OHs are pretty in there actually. Also sent them to an aux with a Massey Tape-head on.

Once again...bass is unusually loud cos i liked the tone so much and it just seemed to sit with the guitars so well, which is why i brought them back a touch.

I don't know if you mean bass level or the actual bass line... Bass is following the guitars because of the nature of the riff, then accents the syncopated pattern from just before the solo right to the end of the song...

Thanks a lot for listening...just not so sure I agree with some of those pointers - sorry!
