Mix Critique needed for 70's Retro Rock Song!

Hey all --

Im engineering/mixing tracks for this rock group called Fire Murphy... this song is called "Playing With Fire"... I'm wondering if i could get some critique on my mix so far? Any suggestions? I found the song pretty enjoyable to listen to actually... its fun... reminds me of a mix of The Doors/The Who/and.. umm .....Prince.. haha.

Thanks in advance!

Does the song ever 'break out"?

It sounds trapped in a permanent break down section..

Will it ever rock out?!

DONT DENY THE ROCK!

Cool....two comments: the voc and tambourine sound too good...I'd put a cheap mono spring reverb on those to mess it up a bit.

Cool dude.

I think it´s a cool song, but I´m afraid I find it rather boring to listen to. Everything that happens in the song you get to hear the first 30 seconds. After that you just wait.

I also have a little problem with songphrases in the verse. After each line it´s like the riff just stops and have to start over and over (hard to describe. Hope you know what I mean, or that someone else can tell it better ).

I feel that the guitars are a little laid back, when they instead should be full of attitude and some kind of edge. I would like to have a guitar track where I can hear that the guitarist really wants to kill the guitar.

Overall I think it´s got potential and I like the sound of the singer, although he could freak out a little more.

Thanks for all the responses!!

I took all your suggestions into consideration and let the band know... they love constructive criticism because they're always trying to improve.

I think they're on to something though cause the song was stuck in my head all day... could be because i sat there recording it for hours though..

And no they don't have a website up yet.. its coming though.

I'll post more of the tracks when they're completed.

Any other suggestions from those who haven't taken a listen yet?

Thanks!

if you did drums, amazing...

i feel like they are sequenced though. i like this, except the vocals seem way too dry and muddy

I don't like the bass drum, and I agree that the guitars sit too far back. The other dude singing at about 2:30 bothers me. I feel like the vocal needs some color to it. It sounds too clean. I think it should be a little dirtier. Good job. BRING UP THE CLAPS!

Thanks for the posts!

I've seen a couple now saying the vocals are too clean.

What are some good techniques to add "color" to vocals and dirty them up?

Thanks!

Not to flame, but I agree with the others, this tune is dying to break out into some kind of rocking chorus. . . It needs it as it would add immensely to the tune.

Run a mult through a guitar amp.
Run a mult through a cheapo efx. unit in bypass mode.
Send the voc through a PA and put a mic somewhere ridiculous and make your own "echochamber".
