Mix Suggestions: Modern Emo/Pop Punk

Mix Suggestions: Modern Emo/Pop Punk So this band sent me the session last night at 4am. It’s 2pm and I actually slept, AND I think it’s done?

I had nothing to do with tracking it, but whomever did, kept it really clean and nice. It’s amp sims, on guitars and bass, the kick and snare are augmented by samples that I cut from the cleanest hits in this song. They wanted ti loud, and I do believe this is quite loud, -8dB RMS during the choruses, although some of the pop that’s out now hits -6... now THAT is insane...

I’d love any and all suggestions, I need to finish this very soon, so let me know what I can do to tighten it up all modern-like.

Thanks muchly!

Props to whomever tracked it, it sounds nice. There are two things that stick out to me. The vox seem really quiet in general, particularly in the choruses but. And that synthy sound doesn't quite sit right. Other than that, great job, sounds nice and modern.

Maybe it's just me, but the snare has a good pump, but needs more crack. maybe add a little more high end to it.

Snare is a little too loud for my taste. Turn the hihat up a little bit. And I would get rid of the Tambourine in the chorus. It sounds cheap.

I moved the synth around a bit in the spectrum, re did the vocal sound, and MS split the guitar and dumped some 1k and 2k out of the mid to leave more space for the vox... I think it worked well enough to clear the vox up a bit.

You know, I'd dump the tambo also, but the band wants it in there... I hadn't seen that last comment till after this mix was revised, so snare may still be a bit loud.

Thanks much guys!

The only thing I thought was maybe the guitars could be a tad louder. Otherwise its good.

If I could turn this around a little could I ask you something about the mix?

I've been trying to get a good sound for rock vocals thats basically like what you're got here, it sounds like the singer could easily have gone a little off with the dynamics but you keep it down pretty tight and present. What are you doing for compression?

I'm not sure what the guitar itself was, but the amp sims were set to uber (right side) and diamond plate (left side) on Guitar Rig 4.

Processing (all plugins):
API 550b 2.5k @2dB, 1.5k @ 2dB
Pultec MEQ 300Hz @ 2, 1.5k @ cut 2, 3k @ 5
Highpassed at 113Hz 12dB/Oct
Lowpassed at 9.30kHz 6dB/Oct

Parallel compressed with a 660 hitting like 3dB of compression
with a Pultec MEQ taking 1.5k all the way out.

In terms of the vocals, I was actually not happy with the vocal sound on this one at all... In fact today I went through a reworked it a bit... It was sitting atop the mix, not a part of it.

Processing (all plugins):
Massey De:Esser
API 550b 7k @ 2dB, 3k @ 2dB, 700 @ -4dB, 100 @ 2dB
Highpassed at 180Hz, notch cut at 2.74k (his voice is kinda shrill there)
Massey CT-4 set to max compression and max makeup

Any of the dynamics are automated after that.

****, ignore the delays on the vox in the breaks... those are 'fixed,' and the snare is made a little less annoying.
