Practice your mixing skills again, now ACOUSTIC

It's an acoustic ballad.
I guess it will be challenging due the several keyboards, piano and acoustic guitars.
Let's see what you get.

This is great. I will have to take a stab at both the songs you posted this week.

Meh, I had 45min's of free time so I did a quick mix.
No EQ or track CLEAN up / arrangement stuff on any tracks, Only Panning. Ok, some high/low cuts. Small Chorus on the bass and a light touch of flange on the clean gtr.
I make several busses and put some bus-compression on different instruments. No Masterbus compression. Still have dynamics left. On the highest point around -15dBFS rms/-2.8dBFS peak. I'm not a fan to smash the shit out of it...
The plugs: Waves SSL and stock Logic 8pro (Chorus/Flanger/Space Designer with lexicon 300 IR).
It sounds still some how, dull not living enough. And the drums are to present otm, i think.

O BTW, I'm moving to a new place (final 40m2 of space for a new Ctrlroom and 15 for a liveroom in my new apartment) so I have ZERO room treatment OTM. So the panning could be have some odd issue's here and there and also the volume of busses compared with others. A what the hell, don't be gentle just fire the bullet.

skidwasted, if you have the midi files that would definitely make everyones mix sound different. With a track like that I think the midi files would be really good to have. Maybe switch out some of the strings and piano and such.

Unfortunately no...
I will only have the drums midi and maybe Thursday.
Does anybody know a program where I can convert the piano, strings from wav to midi?

I think that isnt a good idea. Row and mix with the tracks that you have. Make the best out of it.
For example in the Piano track there is clipping when the lower sections is building up. Im trying to get it out and i found several ways to fix it. And there are more moments like that in this song.
Its fun working with material like this. But the drums are to static played... But with some cut and paste and a nice lexicon 300 drumbooth IR you can already maked it more "live" sounding. It cost work afford and time and is for me mixx'en

I guess you are right when it comes to keeping it a mixing job but i couldn't resist the temptation to swap those vi's with some nice ones. I was also considering adding small melodic parts to it but had to stop myself.

Erm...just how much do you know about music technology?! If you're lucky, a monophonic melody line can be converted wav to midi fine. Polyphonic? forget it. Yes, I know about melodyne DNA...no it's not out yet...yes I am sceptical as to how accurate it'll be.

For me, that sort of thing changes the job from mixing to production. Just work with what's there. If it's mostly samples though, it's a very different set of skills to actually working with a live production.

^^Logic has built in audio to midi function. Works relatively well, complete with velocity but a lot of tweaking is required and also just on monophonic sources. It works very well on drums, tried it once on a bass line and it was a bit of a mess but with a few edits got it to work.

Hello!

I'd like to add my interpretation, spent sometime this afternoon, here's my mix:

Send big files the easy way. Files too large for email attachments? No problem!

In fact, I also had problems with the synthetic drums (the BD sounded like coming straight out the Drum-Machine), so I tried to give them a more natural feel with different reverb settings. The tracks also had some clips (Piano at the end) and some accoustic guitars were not played THAT clean. I did not try to fix this, just took it as it was.

BUT - I didn't like the guitar solo. The feel didn't fit well to me, and the fast part was faked, I guess. Playing some guitar myself, I decided to play a new solo over the track and replaced the old one (well, you said, do what you like with the tracks, right?)

I liked the dramatic atmo of the piece. Had fun with it. Let me know what you think,

Greetz,

Fishmac

Ill have a go on a Neve and a Tore Seem console.

BUT YOU REALLY HAVE TO GIVE US THE MIDI FOR THE DRUMS!!! so we can make them sound acceptable.

I found this idea very exciting but without vocals and good drum sound or drum midi it is getting to be less exciting.

Would be nice if we could have the midi drum files.

Thanks for listening!

Sure, I'm gonna upload the solo as a wav. file tommorow!

It's a great Idea actually, because it works and people want to do it, for free. I like this idea, would also like it as a "helping out"-Forum, if one really has trouble to get a specific sound right. So others could help him out, if they want, and mix a part of a track or add an instrument they play.
It just gets difficult if you start talking about business...
