My funniest/worst studio moment.

So a good money maker around this town is doing vocal camp recordings off and on during the summer. They are easy work. I can usually put an assistant on them and let them get some time in the chair recording vocals and building their chops. Not much of the talent is great but most of it is ok. Not something you want to listen to but it pays the overhead for the month so that I can work on artist development gigs. So I was recording one of these today (Because I Had A Down Day) and most of the day was find until these two sweet 50 year old ladys come in for their time slots. The first one goes into the booth and I set up the mic for her and I turn around to leave and the other women is holding up a 16 X 20 framed crayon and pencil sketch of Jesus over her head for inpiration. I almost fell over then and there. At the end of the first pass the women is weeping. So am I for entirely different reasons. So this women sings a couple of really dreadful passes down and I burn her a CD. Then the Jesus women goes into sing and sings the following version down:

Well as they say. At least I will be with my friends.

Thanks, I think. Its just a bit shy of going Yoko Ono. Just not the high pitched screaming. My favorite part was when she said I need to fix a couple of bad notes.

A couple??? Oh my god!!!!

OMG! I needed a good laugh, today has sucked for me trying to write with a bit of a block! Thanks for the moment of brevity.

It's my pleasure. I felt like I had to share my pain but also share my laughter. I still burst out laughing and its 24 hours later.

Its killing me,

Turn about is fair play.

She did it to someone else first.

The difference is she PAID him to sit through that horrid song.

Anyone who is not deaf can tell that it's awful (except maybe her, who has probably convinced herself she can sing).

I don't think it's ethical to put it up for music people to scoff at, she obviously is oblivious to how awful it is. I'll admit I did crack a smile listening to it (kind of like the American Idol train wrecks), but the people on that show know that they very well can be mocked...

It's like a waiter spitting in your food because he doesn't like the way you behaved at the table. I think it's wrong, of course that is IMHO.

Your right that is your opinion. It is not mine. I don't really care if you find if funny or not just like I don't care what food you like or what music you listen to. We can all form our own likes and dislikes. Many of us who have lived through many hours of hell find a common ground in sharing our collective experiences. Good or bad. You admitted you cracked a smile? Then you found it funny on some level also. She didn't pay me for this. I was an unwilling participant in this via a client who paid me to work on over 130 different vocalists over the last few weeks. It is filled with all types of people and in many ways it is our own little American Idol. Most are bad. Some are ok. Some are great. And some are just plain laughable. If we can't laugh while we work then what are we doing this for?

You can have your opinion and I will have mine.

I can see this woman singing in the church choir. I can see hordes of regulars telling how awesome she is, and she believes it more and more every Sunday.
Then someone tells her they want her to sing to the world!
So she embarks on this journey to the studio anticipating fame and fortune as she heals the pain of the world.

Aren't we all? making fun of this poor lady!!! Oh but it's so fun! I do like the vocal sound though.

I bet she's getting signed by the end of the year, what with talent like that! I never got how people could be that terrible and not know it. I have a friend who is an AMAZING guitarist, but can't sing for poop, and he comes to me the other day, telling me that he's starting a side project band, and he's the lead vocalist........................................................................ Riiiiiiiiiight!

Is he mocking her, or just letting us know that this exists. I have been thinking about how I would love to get my own project studio going and that I would really enjoy a career recording music. This has shed a new light on it. Really, I mean I bet some people couldn't sit through that, and so this in a way is letting us know more about wht this job is about...

I think he was respectful in that he recorded her, didn't say anything rude to her, and let the process go forth. Then he shared with us, like many do here.

I didn't laugh, I turned it off after 15 seconds cause I couldn't listen to it. I guess I REALLY do need more ear training :-)

Thank you for getting the point of it. Some people find it funny. Some people don't. Take if for what you want.

it had feeling - it was raw - like a Dali painting

Thanks.... Abstract Singing right?
I cracked a smile but for the most part I was like a deer in headlights.
There is really nothing else to say but perhaps.... I'm sorry
especially if she's coming back to do the other 8 tracks for her Christmas CD.
