Thread Starter | New mixes for your listening pleasure - Opinions & Advice welcome
Ahoy hoy, I've been busy tinkering on a couple of tunes and would really appreciate some fresh-eared feedback. "The Girl Who Loves You So" http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/336056/GIRLMP3.mp3 "Kicked Off The Planet" http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/336056/KICKEDMIXMP3.mp3 The two tracks are by different people, both are local (Belfast) songwriting buddies of mine, I'm just helping them with the recording. It's been a great learning experience but as ever I find myself fumbling through at times as opposed to knowing what I'm doing. With that said, feel free to throw suggestions, opinions, or advice this way. Hope you enjoy 'em.

Bump by way of a specific question to anyone who does me a favour and listens to the tracks. To your ears do these mixes sound like acceptable pre-master mixes? If not could you advise on what areas these mixes are failing? Any advice would be really appreciated. |

The first one sounds pretty good to me. However, there are some balance issues. The acoustic guitar is pretty buried by the vocals and is most evident when the spinning percussion bits come in. The backing vocals are also a little quiet but the balance is definitely right I feel for this kind of music. It might be a little un-exciting freq wise, maybe a subtle boost in the upper range on the acoustic guitar. And maybe automating the piano a little further forward during and after the solo. Minor adjustments in my opinion but to answer your question, yes, I think as is your song will have a good result going to an ME. I'd use "Honey Pie" by the Beatles for a mix reference. |

Hi Vum, much obliged for the reply. The fact that you suggest eq-ing kind of confirms something I've been thinking about these mixes and others, namely that they all sound a little lifeless at times, but am worried about being over-zealous on the high end of things. I will definitely look into this. I think this could help with the acoustic (which I agree sounds buried at times), and I'm going to do a bit more automating on the piano. Don't suppose you have any thoughts on the other tune? Good call on 'Honey Pie' by the way. Thanks again. |
