Desert/Stoner Rock

Hey, I recorded a desert/stoner rock band.

Just gonna explain a little bit how I recorded this.

Drums with a total of 10 mics, yes 10... yikes... into a Focusrite OctoPre > Digi 002.
Guitars was an ESP LTD into a Marshall Valvestate mi'ced with an Audix i5
Bass direct with my Genz Benz shuttle 6.0 as preamp.
Vocals on an AKG Perpection 420.

They're a stoner rock band yes, but they sound approaches a little bit more modern, they were actually really happy with the mix, I could have gone with the really boomy/roomy sound but they preferred this way and I think it works actually. Drums are all natural btw.

here's a mix of one of their songs:

What do you guys think? Any tips?

cheers

Ditto...not a bit though..its real bad--check the mp3 against the original

The vocals drop out on the break too--they should get louder not lower. I also think the vocal effect is too boxy.

Hey criticism is good though because your only a few ticks away from a good mix

You're talking about the Overheads mainly? I think that could be due to being ultra compressed, because the drummer was really really "dynamic" if you know what I mean :P Should I move one OH track to see if they get more phase aligned?

I went back to the mix, added a bit of beef to the vocals, they did sound a little "radio-like boxy", don't really know how the hell I didn't notice that... Anyways did that, adjusted the bass a little bit, playing more a bit of a "bass" role, instead of being so upfront, basically giving more lows to the mix but more subtle. The overheads, I tried lots of things... I don't know I even tried moving one of the OH's track back and forth and the result was crappier... so I just let them be... lowered the snare and kick a little bit too, and guitars are more upfront.
On the "Pseudo Mastering" I had cut way too many lows before, so I just did a 0.2dB cut on the 100hz and I think 0.4dB or so on the 200hz range, upped just a tiny bit in the 1k-2k area, and took a little cut on 4khz or so... Then some saturation, stereo imager, just a little bit of compression and a limiter. Basically that's it I guess...

I think it's sounding much better, I tried it on my car and it's sounding more rockin'... My main problem here is, albeit being really new to this (this guys are my first real mix), I have a pair of M-audio Bx5a, on my room... My house has a LOT of reverb or something, it's pretty crazy to mix in here, and I'm in a corner, with the monitors like 5cm away from the wall :X so you can imagine the crazy lows dispersing going on in here (oh.. and forgot to mention, right at my left is my really large window :D) and their distance to me is like 50cm or so ... still I'm pretty much on "TOP" of them... so it's pretty bad... Obviously this doesn't excuse my lack of skills, I'm still learning, but it doesn't really help either
