pop-punk mix

Hey guys, i was doing some mixing tonight on this demo that i recorded a few nights ago. Im not too crazy about the mix and i was hoping for some insights.. first let me tell you about the set up.. i have a mesa triple rect amp. the mics i used were e609 on axis centered at the cone, and a 57 off axis 45 degrees going straight into my mbox. I am not to happy about the guitar.the track still needs bass guitar in it. take a listen and please give me some feed back cause it still sounds amatuerish in my eyes and it doesnt sound anything near a professional mix.. thanks.

I think one thing that's killing you is there is a lot of compression on the drums. Too much. You're losing punch.

GTRS:

How close are the mics to the speaker??

The one thing in particular that stood out to me with the guitars was the panning. It seems like all your heavy chunk/rhythm guitars are pretty up the middle and your lead goes back and forth between the left and right. I would take your rhythms and pan them hard left and right, if you have two parts, or doubles and leave the lead up the middle if its an intro or a part where there are no vocals.
Also there seems like there is something weird going on with the lowend in the kick. I am just listening on headphones but something weird is happening and I'm not totally sure what it is. Maybe its the way the compressor is hitting things but like I said can't tell on headphones right now.

the mic's are closed mic'd on the top left cone on my cab. the panning on the guitars werent hard left and right prob about 70 left 70 right. the drums were samples from addictive drums.. i had no compression on the stereo drum track but once i put compression on the master it really killed the drums. the octaves i believe are either panned left or right about 50 or so something and the lead is pretty much panned the same but on the opposite side so it would all cut thru ( not to sure since i dont have the session opened). I did start to fix it last night by putting the RYTHM GTS panned hard left and just a tad to the right so it fills up any emptiness on the right side. but my main concern was the sound that that was going into pro tools. I hate the mbox2 mic pre's, there so sterile but like i hear some other peoples work using the same interface or maybe like a 002 and sounds tremendously different. Im looking into a 2 channel mic pre so i can bypass the mbox ones..Other factors that come into as well is my room, but i dont really have to much flutter echo since i have a lot of stuff in my room. heres another sample of the riff.. i personally think the mix is better than the first. let me know what you think and please as much feed back good and bad. thanks guys

Ryan

I heard the new sample, and if you don't have any compression on them, then the addictive drums themselves are smash...it has a 'pumping' effect, but it's not good cause it pulls away from the guitars.

yea the drums are def smash from the samples alone. i should prob print everthing except for the drums with all the processing and then take whatever plugins i have off the master fader. i really need a set of mic pre's
