critique this song please (rock/indie)

hi at all

http://www.derange.ch/arc/tango5.mp3

This is a song from an EP of a friends band that I tracked and am currently mixing. It's my first record I'm trying to mix. I'm trying to get a good mix because I really like this kind of sound.

Maybe we will record some parts of the vocals again, because we dont wanna use melodyne, and sometimes it's a little bit out of tune, though mostly it's the style of his singing.
It's not mastered yet, and the bridge where it's only 1 guitar we will do something with a synth..

Please post your opinions and what I should improve.

The whole project is done in Logic, and base and snare are partially replaced by steven slate samples.
If anyone wishes more information about the equipment used and recording process I can post it later on.

Thx and cheers
Stefan

Well, you have a lot of work in front of you.

The vocal talent, to me, was extremely annoying, not to mention out of tune in various places. I couldn't take 5 minutes of that whining voice. Is that the sound you were going for?

Is there a reason the first 1:30 sounds like the band only has a drummer and bassist?

Okay, maybe I'm not in tune with this style. Mix levels are all out of whack. There is a lack of high end presence in the mix (except for the vocal) that just makes it sound dull.

Take a step back and listen for each instrument. There is a lack of separation in here--part of the song sounds muddled. It sounds more like a first pass after tracing than a real mix.

Don't be discourged. It's only your first record, right?

mix

sounds great through mt klipstch kg4s but everything does, after listening through my epicure t/e 70 monitors the mix sounds fair after adding my sub at 80 hz we find the problems. remove the 80hz [ lo shelf]and lower off the bass and add 3 db at 60 hz to the kick . this removes any stray bass frequencies and now take about 6db off the whole mix at 40hz and the whole mix can come up now the bottom end is cleaned up. dont mind the singer at all. sounds like a young shannon hoon.there is space for some instruments at 700hz to about 2.5 k,so more rhythm guitar pls. this will even the sonics a bit. hope this helps cheers, james,

mattila, alright, thank you for listening to the song, I'll try to check again what you wrote about and will apply it next time I'm mixing the song again.
I'll try to upload a new version again this week, so stay tuned.

Troy, sorry to say that but your posts dont help me in any way...

so other posts welcome but only in a way I understand and can benefit from.

cheers
Stefan
