What the heck

I'm very new to the forum, from last night actually. Here is a little excerpt from a demo my band recorded on a Friday night after going to our day jobs. Very sloppy and loose performance. Probably shouldn't even be bothering you folks of high calibre with this crap. I tried to apply my woefully inadequate mixing skills to this. It's probably not a very good example for analysis... vocals are a key element to our (most) music genres and they're missing here.

Oh well, I could talk forever when it comes to excuses. I'm a bit tipsy right now and full of courage, relatively speaking, so I'll just throw this up to see what anyone has to say good or bad...

I didn't 'engineer' it. An agreeable fellow with a Roland VM-7200 (?) rig captured the performance in the middle of a music store, with a modest collection of microphones and no outboard preamps. I thought he did a a great job all things considered, but what do I know, and I can't say the same for my mixing atempt.

I'll try to post something easier analyzed (?) and more respectable if/when there is a next time.

Seems muddy to me. I used EQ 'sparingly'. Cut lows from the guitars. Drums are mostly untouched. Did try to beef up the bass guitar a bit and perhaps there was a mistake. 2 bus (over?) compressed courtesy RNC and a 1204 VLZPro. This was time adjusted and then mixed in with the original 'in the box' mix. Perhaps a mistake. Didn't seem muddy without the Mackie, but did seem thin/cold lacking balls, whatever. If the performance had more balls maybe that wouldn't have been an issue.

Sennheiser MD441 used to record guitar left and solo, MD421 on guitar right. Audix D series used on kick and toms. AKG 451 overheads I think. Two mics on snare, not sure what. Some Peavey LD condensor used on the vocals. SWR (model?) head direct to desk on bass.

Special effects courtesy real-time use of Echoplex EP-3.

Thanks & good luck with your endeavours,
Dave

P.S. I breached etiquette somehow, I have time to learn better.
