Miking classical guitar

Hi

Info:
Classical guitar in very old stone church.
Musicians chair placed on a blanket.
Using 2 Røde K2
Behringer Eurorack UB 2442
Fostex CR-500
Edited in Logic8.02
No EQ or other filtering.
Mic placement: Distance 160 cm height 170.

I like the sound but I think that the middle register(3. and 2. string) is sometimes to dominating. I would also like a clearer bass.
Should I try to to go a little nearer with the mics? Or should I try a third mic placed closer? And in case wich mic?
Advice welcome.

with regards

Honestly man I think it sounds better than you think. I was trying to come up with some bad things to say but I couldn't think of any. It's a baroque sound, so I don't think people are expecting some grand production; it fits the time period to not be perfect-sounding.
I think the natural reverb is great, and I like how you can hear the performer's breath sometimes because it makes the recording more intimate.
Maybe a little EQ to make it sparkle, but I honestly think this is a great recording.
Anyone else? Good luck!

Thumbs up

Beautifully-played...enjoyed listening to that.

The recording sounds great too - you mention the need for more articulation in the bass end (and between strings)...I wondered if this could be a 'node' in the room rather than a mic issue?

Anyway I don't think it detracts; thanks for the music.

The reverb

Than You for comments

After having listened to the track for several times:
I think the dry signal is clear but when the guitarist plays
louder than mezzoforte the reverb sounds to much.
I will try to mike a little bit closer.

with regards

Nice job. What was the mic configuration? The guitarist and room sound good and I think the balance between direct and ambient sound is fine. The guitar sounds like it has rather dead bass strings though... there's no brightness to the tone of the lower strings like there ideally should be. That's the main thing that stands out to me. Haven't used the K2s myself but I suspect that at 5 ft distance you might get a little more clarity with small diaphragm mic's that have good off-axis response as that's a weakness for most large diaphragm mic's. But they sound very good none the less.

Hi

Thank for response. I have little experience!
I use X-Y. What mic's for this distance?
Neumann km184 could be in my budget.
Anyway I will try miking closer with the Røde K2.

if you can get your hands on any small diaphram condenser, i'd try it. the k2 is a dark mic. not familiar with behringer pre's but something is producing some self noise in there and i wouldn't be surprised if it's the preamps.

overall it sounds nice and sounds like it's probably a great space to record. lucky you!
