| Lives for gear | Seeking advice on bass gtr sound + general feedback I could use some feedback on this mix. I just can't hear it any more, but I'm still trying to stick to a time line. in other words, I can't really walk away from it for long enough to approach it fresh. Still not happy with bass gtr sound. Any other elements that need work, PLEASE let me know. http://www.moonfacerecords.com/posts...0My%20Life.mp3 Thanks!

| basics first Quite a busy guy, yer bass player. And a bit too excited. Too many tones to get into the swing. I'd firstly push his track to the rear by frames, then ticks, since he is too early most of the time. The rest could be treated with hiding the attacks via treble/high mid reduction. It may sound more oldest-style anyway ("oummm, oummm"). Oh,yeah, and why not playing with a decent noise gate; sustain sounds abit too modern for my taste, maybe there is a chance to get more rhythm kick out of of it. But alignment first. If that works, I'd flesh bass/git/dr out to take more room sonically. |

| I think you should either get rid of the attack completely as the above poster said ... or bring out the attack more and add some distortion. I think the bass line works. |

| I'm curious what that what bass rig was used? Sounds like a P-bass through an old Bassmate. It was a mic'd cab though wasn't it? This tune is GREAT! Lots of realness going on! I can def hear Steve Cropper and Duck Dunn influences. I'm still learning, but maybe try pulling the bass back a little, and adding a bit of verb on the kit with 25ms of pre delay to pull it farther back. |

| Lives for gear | To gain effective control, compress for the type of attack you want then eq, compress again for body and eq once more. Works every time! The playing is ahead of the beat so move the part back some ticks. I agree with the lessening the attack approach. Maybe scoop some mids. |

Second - great ears! It was, indeed a 70's Pbass, the amp was actually a very early Fender Bassman through a Fender 4x12 cab and mic'd with an EV RE20 into a GT Brick. That signal was sent through an old DBX 160X on the way in for just a little bit of GR and color. The entire song was cut 'live', including the vocals. | |
