Female vocal chain critique

Hi,

Up until now I've only recorded jazz instrumentals and I don't sing, so your opinion on the vocal chain would be greatly appreciated.

I used a U87 on Vox to a Dav preamp and used the internal processing of the Korg 32xd for mixing and comp-eq-effects. I know the vocalist is a little pitchy so I will have her re-due the take next session.

Need some input on the vocal compression eq and effects, please.

Not exactly a technical comment but sounds like you got it together very well. She sounds youg and shaky and it's a little essy in places But I woundn't turn it off in disgust. That's really how I judge stuff. It's ok that I not like it. It's another thing if I can't stand to listen because the recording is bad. This is pretty good for what my opinion is worth.

You are correct she is young. She has studied voice so I am hopeful that her talents will only increase as she works at the project. I to have improvements I need to make and learn about capturing voice and how to coach a vocalist. I believe she is defiantly worthy of an opportunity to be heard.

Thanks for your kind comments and support-!!

For the most part it sounds good. What I'm hearing though is this.

1. Sounds detached from the track (Like she is singing to a soundtrack) When I had to record people to a soundtrack I would make the track sound the way I wanted it too... then I would make the vocal match the track. One tendacy is to make the vocal sound great and then all of a sudden it sounds bigger than the rest of the song or sticks out in contrast to the sonic quality of the soundtrack.
2. When the song starts and before she sings her first line I hear a lip smack or breath that didn't need to be there.
3. A little de-essing would be nice
4. Make her vocal a little warmer but not dark sounding.

Hope that helps?

I have recorded jazz artist on location for many years and trying to match a vocal in the studio to a live recording is difficult to get the two to gel together. Not that this recording is jazz.

My least experience is what you hear. A style of music I am not that familiar with and is hard for me to tell if eq and comp are right and do I have the right mike for this vox are some of my questions.

Being an instrumental jazz player and trying to figure out how to record a Christian female vocalist is humbling.

I am obviously out of my element.

vocal to sharp and could use a bit more room imho. too upfront
and some more minor tuning on some points...
