I know this rough mix is not the greatest and I do not have much to work with at the moment. Just the waves Renaissance EQ - Comp - and multi tap delay along with protool's plugs that come standard. I already feel there is to much 4k or so in the mix, but that could just be me. I'm learning a lot as I go, but the hardest thing is getting the band to listen to me...when they think they know better. In a small room the guitarist suggested putting the bass on his marshall JCM2000 all the way to 3 o clock because thats what they did before for another recording..with using a dynamic mic proximity effect was not my friend..Taking lots of eq I managed to make this sound what i feel is sub par but I would like to get other peoples opinions if possible. I would prefer more natural tones myself. All recorded through a Delta 1010 Kick was EV ND686 Snare beta 57 OH's Oktava mk102 Toms audix d-2 Guitar was 57 and SM7b Vocals were through a grace 101 and a Neumann 109 the rest of the recording was through an allen and heath gl2400 board. Oh, did i mention the vocals were scratch?

Just to give you fair warning I'm listening on headphones. What I do hear sounds pretty darn good. I think the guitars mix well and sound fine for this genre of music. The overall mix sounds well balanced with the exception of the vocals which you did mention were scratch. Actually the only thing that bothers me about the vocals right now are the shrillness of the high notes (that first high note startled me ), a little eq and compression could probobly fix the current take but there's no harm in retracking a better take . The snare sounds a little too dead, needs some snap, one easy fix would be to mix in a good snare sample using sound replacer or drumagog. Other than that all this song needs to be top 40 is a professional mastering job to beef it up a bit. For a rough mix and still being in the learning process like myself you have done an outstanding jobthumbsup. Hope you plan on reposting the final mix, there may be some people here that would be willing to do a quick mastering job for you .

It really isn't all that bad.. The mix overall was pretty full and rounded. I do understand the last posters comment on the bass drum.. Really sounding thin in headphones and my nearfields. Was a lot of eq'ing done on the bass drum or is that natural tone you got?

Yeah a fair amount, some high passing around 120 or so and a lot of cuts in the low mids..250 to 500. They wanted it mixed loud so i had to make some sacrifices to that, maybe i can add a bit more back and bump down the overall level to get a little more thump. As well as had a better snare sample. Im becoming less of a fan of brass snares. It was a yamaha 5 1/2 x 14.

| nice job
It's late so I am listening through beyer dt770's and it sounds great in the cans. I like the kick for this particular song. I think it works well. I thought I heard some wierdness in the cymbals maybe a phase thing but I only noticed it early in the mix. Problably me cuz i have been listening to music all day and my ears are likely ready for a break. The guitars work well they are right up front but not overpowering. As the previous poster mentioned there is a bit of shrill to high notes on the vocals but maybe that's for effect. The beauty of recording is that artistry overlaps science so it always depends what you are goin for. I could hear this on the radio actually I'd prefer it over most everything on the radio, and this is coming from a "metalhead". Maybe a few tweaks and a trip to the mastering house then out to the airwaves !

I like the writing and the vocals are good. I think the vocals could be tightened up a bit. Also, the overall mix has this midrange thing going that sounds like it's being boasted around the 1k-4k area. I would back that back out so the mix is less stingy. Overall, good job outside of those little corrections!
