Here is a mix (High VBR MP3) I did of the song Coldplay - Sparks. I did all the instruments and singing. Yes I know the drums aren't completely on time and the bass is weird in parts and snare is a bit loud and up front, but let me know what you think. Low frequencies also don't translate very well in the room I'm mixing in right now, so let me know how they sound. Pros/cons or suggestions would be great. Vocals are a lil loud too I believe. I tried to make it sound as analog as I could because the original song was recorded 100% analog, but that didn't work too well. If you're curious what I recorded through then ask (not that impressive...getting new pres and condenser soon)...Thank you!

there is a newer mixed version...Snare sounds better and I EQed pretty much everything and used VoxengoAFTapeBus to try to get more of an analog sound...I'm just trying to improve my mixing, so tell me what you think about the mix (pros/cons). Thank you

thank you...you're gonna be pretty suprised with this like I said in my first post. I've gotten that compliment before about vocals on a more indie/rock song.

SM7b > Presonus Firepod (yes I know not the best pres, but pretty damn good for 600 dollars (8 pres) > then I used Waves RVox/REQ/URS Strip(for highs)/API 2500
I also sent the vocals to an aux send and added Waves Rverb and API 2500 seperately.

I love the SM7b, it works on rock songs and soft songs. I would like to get a nice condenser that's around 1500 $ but I don't have the money right now...So SM7b is workin great for me for the time being. I'm also upgrading my pre soon though to a Avedis MA5

Edit: The SM7b is actually suprisingly nice on acoustic guitar. Gives it a nice round bass to it and a nice top end. Beats my cheap Samson C02s (which I used in the recording, that's y the acoustic sounds so thin...and the firepod pres)

Cool, I just bought myself an SM-7b too!

Really nice mic although a bit quiet!

nice ... i would play you mine but it is really coldplay ...

i was the Asst. Director on a show we shot about 7 or 8 years ago ... first show they ever played in canada ...

then i did a mix for a video release that never happened ... i had that song in my head for months ... really like the song ...

i wish i could play it for you ... but my respect for artists will never allow it ... they have such a cool feel live ... to bad it will never see the light of day ...

nice vocals btw ... how is gweneth ...

sounds great man! im not too crazy about the snare sound though....seems like it needs to be a little more relaxed, but that could be the dyamics in your playing, like you said, the drums wern't perfect and it is a little in the front. but other then that it sounds like a really good cover. thumbsup

Really cool song...

I'd just work on the drums...I'd try mixing the drums a little lower, and/or smooth them out with some more compression and some reverb.

Really enjoyed the vocal, but I'd take the melodyne out completely. The second mix you posted sounded like it was more prominent than in the first one. Maybe try it without. Being slightly sharp or flat in places makes you human. You have a good voice.

I actually really like this song and how you did it. (I'm not a big fan of CP). I think the bass is a bit tubby, but I have headphones on right now. Overall nice job! (I didn't even really notice the Autotune - not like I do in the original Coldplay songs...)

Wow, good job man!
Fwiw the only trouble is the snare, it sounds too harsh and it seems to not fit into room properly...
