Here is the first mix I ever did (in my own studio with my own gear). This is from 3 years ago. It is a rock/metal band called Two Sided Seaon. After spending the last 3 years mixing and listening I have learned many things and noticed more than a few things about this mix. I would like to see if your critiques are similar to mine. I also have sinced nuked almost all the gear in the studio since then. This was mixed compeley ITB and used no triggering or samples (which is painfully obvious) So let me let you know what gear was used in the production. behringer mx 9000 console - now gone motu 24IO - gone Motu Digital performer - still here akg d112 on kick - still here sm 57's on guitars,OH's and toms- still got em but not for OH"S akg c2000 for vox - gone bass - sans amp bass driver - still here behringer comp / gates - gone Lexicon mxp 1 - still here guitars - epiphone les paul, schecter c1 amps line 6 flextone 1x12, boss gt8 into peavey power amp then 4x12 carvin cabinet tracking Room very small - low ceiling less than 7"ft almost a triangular space with on corner chopped and squared off. Lightly treated for relfections no bass trapping mixing room - small rectagular room with better treatment and bass trappin OK this what I had to work with. I am looking for critiques on the mixing as I am about to start another project with this same band with better gear

sounds good. this is not what i would normally listen to (the genre) but i enjoyed it mainly because the mix was pretty interesting.. listening through decent headphones. the drums are the best part imo. sometimes the vocals get buried but that could be a desired effect and it seems to work ok for this song. one thing is i feel like it is missing midrange -- but i know (from reading about this) that lack of a midrange was something Metallica employed a lot before the Black album... taking out the mids and boosting the highs and lows. sometimes i feel like the guitars are overpowering. i also feel like there could be a slight more buss compression to glue it together better. but that's all i can say -- i am not an engineer, just a musician, so i have great respect for people who call mixing their craft. overall nice work -- the gear you used was used well so it doesn't matter that it was cheapo stuff.. you employed it well. a mastering engineer could add some shine to this and you would have something to be proud of! cheers jd justice

Thread Starter | thank you so much for
talking the time to do this. I agree with all of it and then some. I feel the mids are lacking a bit, and the bottom has got a some mud to it. I hadnt learned subtractive eq yet when this was mixed. I was also very new to compressors in the mixing environment. It was a tough mix because we were very disconnected. I was not there for barely any of the tracking just had files emailed to me each night and I built the mix from there. Other than that it is a very static mix. I wish i had given the faders a ride at times which would have helped the vocal / guitar fight. Thanks again for taking time out of your day to give a listen. Especially since it's not your genre !
