Rock Alternative Mix

Here's a test mix I had to do for a local band that are still in the recording process. I've only mixed the song. After listening to it again today I think the overall may be too bright, almost harsh, isn't?

Any comments would be appreciated!

hey man i think it sounds great nice and big. Only thing is maybe the snare should be pitched up, sounds a bit dark for the song, i get a mature paramore vibe from the song dunno if thats what the band is going for tho. sounds huge tho good job.

The band were looking for a fat rock type of sound but I agree with you. Also, if the snare would have been tuned a little bit higher I could have get a bit more crack out of it. The snare was really ringing around 160hz (like bad ringing) so I gated it and sended it to a big plate using a UAD DreamVerb.

Thanks!

It's a Pearl mapple snare tuned really low, damped with moongels to stop the overtones (but was still ringy on the track I received) and it was recorded in a big room. For the top mic I've added a couple of db around 200db for punch and fatness. 3db at 3000hz for crack and also plenty of high around 8000hz then compress it for about 4 or 5db using slow attack / fast release. I didn't used any parrallel compression for the drums this time (I always do usually).

For the long decay I used the bottom mics that was sent to a plate verb (highpassed around 2500hz to remove the high sizzling). I received a pair of far walls room mics and closer stereo room mics tracks that were also blended in to have a more naturel reverb and decay.

Hope that helps!

Thanks Jake! Man, I'm still listening to the mix and I really think it's too bright though so it gives the effect or missing low mids. There's an annoying frequency in the left crash cymbals at 7800hz. Notching this would help I'm sure. I used a Pultec EQ on the master buss and I think I might had abused on the top end boost!

Everything sounds excellent. Not too bright to my ears.

Only thing that i wasnt crazy about was the ride cymbal in the verse.

Feels like it should be hihat there.

Sounds totally radio ready though. Killer...

Ye bro the great thing about mixing in the box is we can recall mixes the next day, so easily and change things very easily . Btw your separation between the bass and the guitars is a+ really well done. Keep the rocking tunes coming.
