That sounds great! Only think I might do a tad different is add a little more "crack" to the snare...maybe around the 6K region.. Everythings sounds really good..nice work

I think, if so, this applies to the whole drum set (except metal), but its a minimal amount, very subtle thing... maybe the high-damping of the snare reverb is somewhat too strict, and also too small the stereo widh? the voice is quite bright which may push aside the snare sometimes. fine-tune a multiband comp? as always, the triangle is snare/voice/git. the voice is much on top here, the others could catch up somewhat, and then compress. (only an idea from outside *g*) good track!

Sounds great! How about sharing the details of how it was recorded. That guitar tone is incredible! Good job!

thanks for the comments. Tracked to Lynx II to Nuendo, mixed via AMR 1600 with some UAD plugins and some outboard... Dual Rectifiers were used, my mic was a Marshall V77 modded. I really wanted this to be a guitar driven tune, and given that its going on an A&R demo disc, I also wanted the vocal to be up front and clear. Anyone comment on the song itself in addition to the recording? As a matter a fact, if you have a minute or ten, take a listen to the other three tracks on the Blackline site and tell me which you'd put first on an A&R promo disc. Thanks Steve www.bangrecording.com www.blacklinerock.com |

I listened to your songs. The recordings are really good. If I were you I would put "Knees" as track 1 on your disc. To me, it is the one that really grabbed me during the first 30 seconds. I think that when A&R people are listening to demos if you don't grab them during the first 30 seconds of track 1, they don't bother to listen to the rest of it. Any chance you could give more detail about the recording? Like a rundown of the mic/preamp/eq/comp used for each track during recording. Thanks! |

Thanks for that.. Man, my band is having issues. We were actually going to put knees last. The order we have it as of now is Battlecase, Run, Superone, Knees. But you and a bunch of other people have said Knees should go first and we're just completely confused. If anyone else can take the time to listen to the four songs on the page ( www.blacklinerock.com )and list their opinion of song order for an A&R demo, it would be greatly appreciated. For the recordings of Run, Superone, and Knees, it was basically tracked through Neve and Trident pres. I bussed stuff out to Midas Venice channels and eq'd them and sent them back to the workstation for mixing. I do pretty simple stuff, I take low mids out of the drums and add upper mids, I double compress the vocals with uad comps, I may mult the snare and add some heavy compression. Guitars get nothing but eq. From listening to Andy Wallace mixes, I've learned that the most important aspect of a good mix is the balances so I really try to work on that. Battlecase which is my favorite mix because it sounds ballsier and thicker (to my ears at least) was tracked much the same and mixed through an AMR 1600. All mixes went through an SSL compressor at some point, 2:1, slow attack fast release, taking 1-2 dbs off. Thanks, Steve www.bangrecording.com www.blacklinerock.com |

Sounds cool man. I think you can work the snare a little more. The harder hits sound ok, when the drummer isn't hitting hard enough (often when a little break is comming ) there's a little lack of snap that can be fixed. Perhaps increase the predelay on the snare verb? The drums in general could use some low-mid cut (around 300Hz) to sit better in the mix and have some room for the bass in the center.Cool vocal! Total mix could be a litlle wider. Greetings, Dirk

I dig the sounds here. Agree about the snare comments. Needs more crack than thud, although the punch is all there. The kick doesn't breathe but it works. Room sound on the kick, especially a "resonant air" kind of STP kick sound would help alot. The singer has a great voice for this kind of stuff. Gtrs sound great. Punchy f-in mix! Balances are very good. Can't comment on the width issues given that I'm listening on computer speakers... except to say that the mix reminds me of Soundgarden's "Down on the Upside" record... sort of a "Big Mono" sounding album and quite a sonic about face from "SuperUnknown." I think it's due to the gtrs sharing alot of the same tonality and spacing. Still sounds great, but distinctly different gtr sounds that still work well together would help with the separation. Is there one gtr in the band or two? |

Hi Bang, From "left to right" frequency wise I'd try: Add some low to the bass, remove low midrange (probably 200-400) especially in the kick, add some high mid aggression/definition(maybe around 2k) and instead remove a bit of the high sizzle. My 0.2 Norwegian Kroner |

Smoking track! The one thing I could say is that those Mesa amps have such a flat sound when they play clean. You can tell that they are set up to crunch. They always sound like humbuckers with dead strings. This is not a critism of your track, they always sound like that on ever "hard" recording. An option is that hollowed out deep sound with chorus, like a Cure -Robert Smith type sound. Top notch stuff. |
