Lightbulb Indonesian 'Linkin Park'-advice tracking

Hello All,

I need advice on how you would approach tracking this band. This is their demo. They just got signed by Sony.

This is what I'm planning to do:

Drums:
Kick: Beyer Opus Inside, D112 Outside
Snare: M201 Top, RE20 bottom (amazing crack/attack!)
Toms: Sennheiser MD441x2 (Only one tom and one floor tom)
Hi Hat: Beyer M160
OH: Josephson C42
Room: R84 Blumlein

Bass:
Direct Aguilar
Another thru his overdrive stomp box

Guitar:
R84 with pop filter
SM57
Blue Ball (tentative)

DJ: Direct thru ADL DI.

Vocal (Rap): SM7/RE20- will try U87 and AKG with Blue Lollipop
Vocal (Growl/Sing) Will try like the rap vocals

Preamps:
DBX786 on OH
Hardy M1s on drums, 8 ch.
Guitar mic: Vipre on R84
Vocal: Vipre/DBX786/Cranesong Flamingo. Will see which one best for the type.

I would probably insert RNC/Distressor/Amek 9098 Compressor/LA2A/Buzz Audio SOC1.1 lightly on neccessary tracks.

I'm wondering on how do you edit the vocal/parts to sound like Linkin Park's 'stuttering efx'

Thank you for your help!

your kidding? this band got signed? Off of this song/demo? Not only do they sound totally derivative but there is not a memorable melody or a hook anywhere in sight and to top it off the singer is really pitchy and has major control issues.

Sorry, i know your not looking for a song critique but i've got a group with an amazing singer and a fantastic song with a demo thats ready for radio and we cant get a sniff from a label. Sorry for the negative ranting im just being a baby.

Unfortunately im not familiar with most of the mics you've mentioned so all i've done is wasted your time.Good luck with your project.

Ribbon,
I'm kinda confused as to your tracking question. You listed what mic's you want to use...so what are you asking?

That s t u t t ering effect is done by chopping up the vocals into little pieces and repeating parts of it....

On a side note, if they just got signed by Sony how did you come to be involved with them? And are you tracking their first album this way?

Randy,
Those are the mics that are available. I am wondering, if you are tracking the band, would you use different setup? Or, How would you track this band, given the same equipment?

Thank you. That's what i thought.

Sony gave them to me to track. Btw, please remember that this is Sony Indonesia, and not U.S. They might sound standard over in the U.S, but here, this band is still considered unique.

Singer has pitch issue and control. That demo was done within 3 hours. They have very little budget to do a polished demo. I know they sound like LP, that's why i post "indonesian linkin park".

Congratulation on finding a group with amazing singer, fantastic song and polished demo. Maybe this band got lucky. I hope yours will soon find its break.

Thank you for others reading this :D

Ribbonmicguy;

You are so far away from the USA. Please tell us slutz in the USA more about your studio. Analog? Digital? How many tracks? What kind of music are you recording? How long have you been around? Does your studio have a name? A web site? Recording in Jakarta sounds cool! Wish I could visit. Thanks.

(just rely on a solution that is technically serious. this should not be difficult)

I think sony would not do it this way if they want actually an "american" sound.
the beauty in the sound of linkin park is one thing, but you and the band need to find the beauty in this very sound the band can actually deliver from heart.

I have already heard other indonesian rock songs and I think it must be like so, just develop as your feeling goes, not try to change too much. perfection is a good thing but it must have a direction (rather than mimicking) and needs time. so its good to stay authentic and only help with the obvious (e.g. some compression, pitch only if the team agrees), unless there is really a new, convincing artistic idea.
to me it sounds quite asian. I can recognize something in here, I think it's good and has style, yet not perfect.
to indonesians it may sound enough "western" to be fascinating. sony knows
so go for it...

btw the "silly fools" from thailand (I hope this is the correct name - I can't read the record covers *g* titles look like ÇѴ㨠and ¢ÕéËÖ§) might be interesting to you, how perfect they could produce some of their tracks (not all). totally international level, still my friends say it sounds strange and I think THEN it must be right *g*.

Ribbon,
It's kinda hard to say what I'd do without seeing the band, and listening to the room that you will be recording them in. The room has quite an effect on my mic placement and choice.

But given your list and assuming a decent sounding room/band this is what I'd start with..

I'd put the u87 outside the kick, the RE20 inside, One of the 441's on the bottom snare, the D112 on the floor tom. The rest I'd leave....

Just do what your instincts tell you.

I wish you the best of luck...post when you get it done if you don't mind.

I don't have a studio currently. I am using different facilities depending on where the labels want me to record. I default to one studio in Bogor, 30 mins away from Jakarta. Owner has Otari Console, 2", Radar, PT Mix Plus, and all the nice outboards, mics and acoustic room. I usually still bring my own stuff to track as well.
I've only been in Jakarta for 10 months. I started taking mixing gigs for the gospel market, while trying to get the secular market moving as well.
Kind of music i 'want' to record: Rock, hip-hop, jazz, orchestra. I used to work for AEA and the jazz bakery in Pasadena, and LA.
I would like to produce, record music more than just recording/mixing them only. Most of them have no idea about preproduction and that most 'thickness' of sound they listen is not about doubling/tripling tracks, or gears, but arrangement and choice of sound.
I'm also in the process of building my own facility. Hopefully, in one year, the facility is up.
As far as website, i don't have any now, but will have one in near future. I call my production company, myself, Right Track Productions.

Randy,
Thanks for the tips. I will post something up when it's done. Btw, hopefully both of them won't mind I'm posting this.
Brad Blackwood and J.P Shenigans (hopefully got the last name right) is involved in this record. J.P is mixing and Brad is mastering.

Watch out for proximity on the D112. If there's a cymbal right by the floor tom, the D112 will not work very well as you will get almost as much cymbal as you do floor tom.

Ribbonmicguy; Is Jakarta a very busy recording area, like Nashville or Los Angeles in the USA? Roughly how many studios are there in the area? It's intersting that there is Gospel work to be done in Indonesia, but I guess you find all kinds of religions all around the world.

Is your project being done at your "default" studio in Bogor, or somewhere else? What is the name of the place where you are doing this project?

It looks like you are able to use lots of cool gear for the project. How much of it belongs to the studio and how much did you bring in yourself? Thanks again.

Bob, Jakarta is the busiest town in Indonesia for recording. However, u can't compare it to Nashville, NY, or LA. I can say that however, we have the biggest music industry in South East Asia.

It would be done at CRS 'default' studio.

Most of the mics are mine. The compressors are mine too. The preamps some belong to my friend, mine and the studio. The studio has the Lexicon 960L which I really love to use :D

Thank you,
Moko
