The mix sounds pretty good...maybe lacking some bass but then maybe you want it that way.

I do think it could use some "Shean" if you know what I mean...but other than that I think everything's ok....

I'm sure there will be other opinions..

What verb is that on the vocals..it sounds really cool.

Very atmospheric. Or maybe because it was so spacious and had reverb.

No really, it was atmospheric because of the nice touches of harmonics from the guitar. It gave it an immaculate feel..

Overall though, it just reeked of indie. It gave me the same feeling that Beat Happening gave me way back when.

Production, well, I'm sure could be taken up a notch or two. It served the song for the moment though.

How is the Washington scene going anyways? Migrating to Vancouver yet?

i used altiverb. i have 3 different verbs on all the different lead vocal "parts" (high verse, low verse, chorus), and one more for the backup vocal part. the guitars have their amp reverbs on them.

this is only the 4th or 5th actual band (3,4 or 5 piece group) ive ever tracked and mixed, so considering that, im pretty happy with it.

john, regarding your comment concerning production, can you make any specific suggestions? or just that youd like it to have a more clean and professional overall feel? and as for the scene... seems fine to me. ive only been here for less than 2 years and theres tons more going on here than there was in boise idaho where i came from. thats all i know.

djui, ill contemplate your bass comment next time i listen to it. im mixing in my small ass cube-shaped bedroom, so sometimes those things are harder for me to judge.

4th or 5th band? Geez...Is that for "business" or is that 4th or 5th time ever recording a band? Pretty good.

About production, I noticed the song is kinda "open". When I say that, I mean it feels live. That is what I meant to say about production taken up a notch or two. I could've been fooled due to the nice spacious feel. But I still think it has an open sound to it. Regardless, it's a good mix.

Good luck over there in Olympia. I just know from what little I read in the Portland, OR zines every now and then.

thats about my 10th or less project. ive worked with 5 solo people(including myself) for cd length endeavors, and actually, with bands so far ive only tracked single songs...

that live feel you mention is interesting. ill have to think about that for a little to figure what i did that would give that impression. we did overdubs for most everthing except for the base guitar and drums, and the guitar amp was in the iso booth... perhaps one of the reasons is becuse of something i sometimes like to do with guitar amps. i mic them close (6" or a foot) and have a more distant mic (4-6ft) and pan them out. gives it a very spacious feel. if im in the computer sometimes ill line the waveforms up and see if it sounds better. i think i did that on 2 or 3 of the guitars. so ill consider that mix choice.

i went to my friend's house in the band yesterday and listened to the mix, and of course it sounded way different there. he has these really shitty home stereo speakers, and the backup vocals dissappeared completely, guitars too loud, etc. once again it affirmed the value of listening anywhere you can. so ill probably be doing a little level adjusting, but nothing major. thanks for the comments guys.
