Critique my song anyone?

Hey everybody. I'd love to hear some feedback on this country song done last year. I recorded everything in DP3. I had to play the bass part on a keyboard, and had to use a drum machine (hadn't gotten into software drums yet, and don't have a good room to record live drums). I think it's a pretty good effort (not being an engineer) for my first mix and first cd project.

I used a Audio Technica 4033a on her voice, and the acoustic guitar went direct, as did the electric guitar and pedal steel. I'd love to hear some comments on the recording if anyone cares to post.

Thanks!

~Chris

I think it sounds good! I think the song is way too fast, tho. I would have slowed it down at least 10 bpm. The first verse comes in rather abruptly. I think the vocalist is very talented, and the vocals sound great, but I don't really like how she comes off in the tune...I'm pretty sure it's the lyrics...And the "quarter" echo is kinda goofy.

The acoustic guitar is a little overly bright (due to it's direct nature.) Everything sounds good, tho, nice and clean, well put together in my book! The artificial nature of the drums and bass don't bother me in the slightest.

Good job! thumbsup

Thanks for listening and taking the time to respond Alex. I agree about the intro being so abrupt, and about the chorus echo (answer) bg vocal parts. It's one of those things I wish I could go back and change a bit, but what a great learning experience! The tempo seems ok to me, and when I was playing the guitar parts it seemed to flow fine. I'm surprised you didn't like how the singer comes of in the song. Everyone hears things differently which is great, and we all learn from each other. I like the lyric and think it's a nice short story. But my songwriting partner is the one who wrote it. I'm not a lyricist , just the music guy! Thanks again Alex.

I found this song to be memorable both lyrically and melodically. The images invoked were vivid and relatable. I appreciated the conciseness of the production. I understood every word Joyce sang.
I visited your website and found it to be a similar experience. Keep up the good work. Did Joyce write this? If so, She is an excellent lyricist as well as vocalist.

I'd like to thank everyone who listened, and all of you that posted. This was the first song I've uploaded to Gearslutz. Great experience, great comments, and what a wonderful community of talented engineers, songwriters/artists, producers, and musicians.

Thank You!
