please: need feedback on a stoner rock mix

Hi there,

I've been working on a stoner project and I'd love to hear your feedback.

I still need to track sleazy paino's/ percussion/ vocals, so it's down to drums, bass and guitars right now.

Check it out here: http://www.scanyourmind.com/track1.mp3

I've just finished tracking guitars and bassguitar, still need to cut the tracks (clean 'em up) but for fun I've already spent a couple of hours mixing..

The guitars are 2 layers: a 72 Fender Tele Thinline into a Carl Martin The Fuzz + the same guitar with my ENGL 530 going bezerk on the lead channel. Tracked with SM57 + Audix i5 into my Focusrite ISA428.

Bassguitar tracked straight into my DAW, I've duplicated the track, one track is clean and "bright", on the other track I've used Amplitube 2 with overdrive and used an EQ to just let the "grind" frequency range pass through.

Drums are recorded at the Waterfront studio. :: WaterFront, Boompjeskade 15 Rotterdam ::

Regards,
Nico

PS: if you'd like to know, this is me you're hearing. I played all the instruments.

Cool song!

I have to say - the guitar tone is too harsh for me - I don't think this is stoner though haha - sorry!

That's pretty amped up for stoner rock. Dust perhaps?

Anyway, it sounds really nice. Definitely post your progress.

Thnx for your feedback guys, you are so kind :D

I'll definitely keep you posted. Tracking some percussion right now, piano and vocals will be tracked this month, I hope.. (depends on other people)

About the vocals: I'd really like to hear some experimental PJ Harvey-ish (think Desert Sessions) vocals on the tunes I've recorded, instead of the stonerrock-default valium-soaked male vocals. (no pun intended, I LOVE most stoner rock bands! But I'd like to add a twist to it..)

Gladly, I've found an awesome singer and she is writing lyrics and melodies right now!

About the guitar sound/ the mix in general: I guess I like it "massive" and "punchy". There's a significant risk of overdoing it, though..

Regards,
Nico

It sounds great, nice punch to it
Have you got other good experiences with your isa pre, I´m thinking of buying one.
I really like the vibe of this number, exiting to hear some vocals on it especially if they are a bit nontypical for this genre.
A.
