Set up a (pre fade) Aux send above the trigger track(s) in this case the kick drum.

Send that to a spare mono bus.

"pick up" that bus on the "KEY" part of a compressor plug in that allows it

Waves C1
Sony
Drawmer
McDSP

Etc etc

(This can be a PITA on Logic but is easy on Pro Tools....)

Thanks Jules,

Your dynamics ideas are perfect on this track. Really "pro" decision making.

Just curious,
i think you are going protools.>>dangerous 2 bus>>cranesong stc-8. did i get that right?

nice

if i heard this track on the usa rock stations i wouldn't think for one second that it "didn't belong" from a performance, style or mix standpoint. these guys should try to get exposure in the usa.

the big new music rock station in the new york area is 92.3 k-rock. these guys definitely deserve a chance on that station.

Thanks! I will pass that on to the band, it will give them a shot in the arm, it's given my early morning a 'lift' too!

Jules,

When you are talking about "hanging" your outboard off your D2B, could you explain the signal paths for individual tracks; eg are the boxes inserted between your D/A convertors and the D2B, or is there another arrangement?
I've just bought a couple of preproduction Phoenix Nicerizers and am just working out how best to incorporate them.
Ta very much

I hear a lot of this in today's "bubblegum-punk" productions, and until now I used to think it was due to exaggerated maximizing/2buss-compression.
But when listening attentively, you can tell it's not on the whole mix.
Nice one, especially when dealing with big guitar walls AND fast kick action.

Great post, Jules. Thanks for the fantastic site and this example. Did the band get signed? Great technique indeed. Sounds like something that would play in regular rotation on KROQ here in Los Angeles.

Cheers,
Steve

Sounds like speaker saturation/compression, I'm gonna try this mixing in some transient control/distortion
