ITB Rock Mix

Hey,
I posted this allready and the thread got lost in the ether somewhere....anyway...
Here it is again and Im open to ideas on how to make it better than it is.
This is a band I engineered/produced/arranged recently and this is the mix that they are currently making notes on before it goes to mastering.

Let me know what you think.
Thanks
Chymer

avril lavigne with male vocals.

with a good label they can sell some CDs..

not my music. sound very good for popproduction.

the kick is a bit "uncool".. too much sss on the vox... bass is very good.

toms too much paned for radio-use.

guitars very good mixed for this kind of music.

the layering is not perfect. snare too far away compared to the kick. hihat sounds cool for this style of music.

good work man!

Thanks for the tips, i agree about the TOMS and will move them in, but I just love the way they come in at the intro....maybe I will pan them inwards after the intro section.

I was a bit worried about the guitars, especially the hook, but maybe they are ok.

Hi Chymer!
I think you have it all to make it sound awesome! The song is great.

Ok this is my suggestions:

I think in general the drums are a bit loud more even in the verses: the snare is a bit too loud...sounds good but too loud. The bad is a tiny bit loud too.

I would remove a bit of the sanp in thew drums to make it sound more natural.
I think you can play with the panning for the Guitars and keys....always you can automate panning by parts.
The kick is too present and I would remove a bit of definition extend the low end to feel it but not to "Hear it" as I can heart it now...also that way you are taking too much space for the rest of the instruments.

the bass is good!

in the chorus the Gtrs have a boost around 450 hz or something that fights with the vocals.

you can play with EQ automation....so the vocals can fit better against the rest in any part of the song.

I think the vocals need to sit better on the mix....I would try to add a tiny bit of reverb o delay or both...I like dry vocals......but that means that sound dry on the mix .. but in reality are effx behind that make the vocal sit right in the mix...
Is just about a bit more of the right ambience.
again must sound dry ..but is not dry.

The hihat needs a bit more definition..I mean more body ...is kind of lost....
Check the keys..there is a freq that have to be cut to clean up the mix.
at the end the vocals sound great.

Can you tell us more about the recording and which system are u using for the mix?

Overall is great....is just about tweaks and is a great song!!Great Job!

Howdy,
Thanks for all the great input, looks like Ive got a few things to look at, which is great, if it makes it better.

The drums were recorded in another studio through an SSL G series I think it is. very flat, no EQ or compression.
Mics were...
KIK: d112/ m88 (out and in respectively)
SN: 57 top/57 Bot/ Josephson e22S TOP as well
HH: Cant remember but I think 57 (dont know why???)
OH: Josephson series 4
TOMS: all 57s (not my firs choice but they worked well)
Rear mono: AKG C12VR
Front mono: nady rivvon cheapy thing
STereo front room: Rode NT1000s
ALT ROOM 1: Realistic PZM
ALT ROOM 2: Elipsoid bullet shaped Ribbon mic

All other overdubs done in my sudio
Bass...
USA Precision > TG2 DI > Distressor OPTO > Germ TONE CONTROL interactive
Split into TL AUDIO D1 > AMPEG SVX PLugin

Guitars....
USA Telecaster > Fender HotRod Deluxe > 57/AKG SOlitube > TG2 > summed to mono > Distressor > Tone Control
and a POD

Vox...
AKG SOlitube > TG2 > Diestessor 6:1 > Tone Control (bit of air)

Keys....
Synthology Ivory (dont tell anyone, damn I just did)
MiniMoog Plugin
Korg Legacy plugins
real Glochenspeil

Hope I didnt bore anyone, its kinda fun thinking about what and how things were recorded.

BTW, I record and mix in SSL Soundscape DAW.

Anymore, tips?
Cheers
Chymer

Hey Lindsay,

Hows things down south?

Sounds like a great overall mix overall, i like the toms where they are
but agree with george, maybe be a little to wide for radio.

Who's the singer?

Nice work!
I think you got a good thing going. the only small suggestion I have is is to make the keyboard a little more sonically interesting with some sort of delay / reverb or other effect. just something to make it a little more like a shiny piece of ear candy.

just a thought though, it may not be your thing but that;s what i wound do. BTW I think that your drums are great and the vocal is nicely recorded.
