First Post On Gearslutz, My Rock Mix

This is my first post on gearslutz forum. I've been an avid "lurker" for quite sometime, this is a post of one of my rock songs. I played all the instruments and recorded and mixed it to the best of my abilities. ALL feedback is welcome (good or bad). It was recorded on a Mackie Onyx 1640 mixer, with Cubase SX3 and some UAD-plugins.

Thanks.

You need to bring the bass part out a lot. In my opinion the guitar is too loud, you need to bring that down a bit. Clean up the tom parts, they're very muddy, the articulation of each note needs to be clearer as well the difference between each tom. The snare is fine but you could bring up the rest of the drums and cymbals. What is it, the china cymbal that has the first hit? That could come out a bit more.

This is all based off of crappy laptop speakers, I'll listen to it again in the morning when I can listen on some decent speakers.

when i look at an analyzer it says that the high end is lacking... so i cranked it up. I appreciate the advice though, I'm still a novice. My monitors are KRK V6's and Mackie HR 824's...I listen to all these other recordings and their drums stand out really well, how do i get that to happen for mine.. the guitars in my recording suck because none of them are mics it's all direct lines from the amp (which is no excuse), but it's still no way to record a good sounding guitar..

DO NOT mix with your eyes! If your ears aren't telling you something then don't change it.

Listening on tiny laptop speakers...

First impressions - Very decent. Guitars tones are not bad at all. As said before - the balances may be a bit askew. Guitars are way up there and the high end on the cymbals is cutting through a bit heavy.

What do you think of Nigel in the UAD1? Even if you don't dig it much on guitar, try it on some non-traditional sources as well. It's got some cool distortions that can work on drums, if you need them to cut a bit more.

Don't bother with a spectrum analyzer, it will only confuse and annoy you. Just listen carefully and compare you're work with other recordings that sound similar. HR824s are decent speakers and will tell the truth if you just trust your ears.

As far as drum sounds, remember that drums are not like an electric guitar, they don't have a very limited dynamic range, and they usually need lots of compression. You generally have to turn drums up more in the mix than other instruments too. Try putting all the drums to their own drum buss and compressing them all together to get them to stand out.
