Thread Starter | rock mix suggestions?
This is a mix that I'm working on in my apartment. I'm mixing on some KRK V4's, so I'm worried that there might be some trouble in the low-end. Also, I've done what I can, but the drums just sound too "soft" to me. I'm not sure where to go next. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Why is your snare right panned? Guitars are way to panned. If drums sound too soft, dont worry. It`s not your fault. If the drummer wants more punch, then he should hit them harder. Quite logic isnt it?

mm... dare i say that better performances and writing would aid this mix greatly i too am confused by the snare panning, it's really extreme i assume those hihats are fake? they sound pretty dodgy to me. |

Thanks for your suggestions. Frankly, the snare is panned like that because I don't know any better. I'll move it and the guitars back closer to the center. The high hats are real; however, I might be processing them strangely someway... I think the performances could have been a bit cleaner as well, but we did what we could in the time the studio was rented for. This is what I have to mix with as of right now... jeremynothman, what sticks out as being strange for the writing? the arrangement? the melody? the lyrics? all of the above? Thanks for your help. I'll gladly take anymore suggestions. |

I think it's a pretty interesting mix! I've always wanted to put the drums to one side in a mix, but have yet to have a production where it would seem appropriate... Maybe pan the rhythm guitar on the left to offset the drums. Slip the lead up the middle...

Buss the drums to a compressor/limiter and squash 'em....... with a quick release. Add a healthy dose of low end EQ. Bring that track up under the original to taste. Panning is kind of wide....fill in the sonic landscape with some panned delays and reverbs. Keep trying. TWEAKHEADZ!!!! I read over the Tweakheadz website and spent some time reworking the mix. Do you think this is headed in the right direction? http://www.willpieschel.com/By_Myself_roughmix2.mp3 Thanks again for your time. Will |

Yes, that's a million times better... Now just boost some 40hz on the bass, about 3db and you'll be ok. Then get it mastered.
