The drums need to come up, and less guitar. The drums are what is driving this song, and the overloud guitars are taking away from the power of it. It could also use a touch more deep low end on the bass, not much though. I also think the kick could use more punch, more 60-80hz. It needs to kick you in the chest.
Vocals sound great. Cool song.

Thanks for the feedback Randy,

I actually dumped some sub low after listening to the track in my vehicle and comparing it with other recordings in this genre. Definately rolled too much off.

Anybody else???

as an amature, I agree with what was said above, everything is there energy wise, but it is not kicking you in the face...which is what sells rock albums. work on the drums some more.

But I really like it, nice job. mix seems seperated well, I like the use of the "radio mic". I wonder if there is anyway to add presense to his vocal? his voice doesn't flow with the drive of the song.

I like the drive of the guitars a lot.

Obviously, my opinion has no weight on these boards because of lack of knowledge and experience, I'm still learning. But what would happen if you compressed the crap out of his voice and then brought it up in the mix? as well as bring the harmony up during the chorus? The song seems to have an 80s rock influence, and from what I've heard, the songs of that time had very present harmonies.

Thanks for the feedback. Actually the vox have been compressed pretty hard. It's just a more transparent comp. actually Vbox in PT and coming in comp. with the Millenia STT-1 with the Trans. switch in SS mode on the preamp and tube on the comp. I guess you'd like to hear it more squeezed... cool... i'll take note. Definately the drums up i agree, however if you hear this on a full bandwidth system the drums don't sound quite as back... but I hear what your saying. All good points and again thank you very much for your feedback. Good stuff.

Cheers!

Hi, Bdiggy.

Nice work! good vocals and nice production.
Snare sound is one thing that bothers me. I think i can hear cymbals from the snare track when gate is opening. If i were mixing this i would take the gate away from the snare and trig it and mix it up with the natural sound..
Good work, though.

Thanks Toni that's a great suggestion. The guy playing drums had a VERY tight setup.
I could barely fit the mics in to some of the toms and such. I also have Drumagog
so it wouldn't be a big deal. Thanks again for the input. This is great.

Although the balances between everything are good... the first thing that struck me is "way too much top end". It was kind of hard on the ears after a few minutes.

Hope this helps...

Sure does help Nomad. I'm a big advocate of not mastering my own work and you just made that point right on the money. Most of what i do that goes out I do not master but to be up to level I took a stab at it. It sounds a bit harsh on my smaller B5a's but not as much on my larger mid sized monitors so.... i hear what your saying.

Thanks man, I appreciate the feedback, good and bad. Don't worry I got pretty thick skin.

In this project Gtr's were recorded with 2 mics. Hi and low respectively. The high mic is the trusty 57 sauce going through a STT-1 Origin with trans. in SS. (neveish) mode and kissing just a hint of tube comp. with eq circuit engaged but no eq dialed (more wire man). The low mic is an EV ND868 going into a Millennia HV3D SS. all the way. Can you tell I like Millennia yet? I've been telling you guys. Sometimes i'll use a third mic (usually a cond) out front 2-3 ft. and do the white noise phase check deal and roll with it. I aux. all this into one track and stack 'em up mixing to taste. Thickness

At mix I'm grouping respective chunks or parts and using a touch of Pultec eq into Ren. comp. and finnally L1 (it's a recipe for disaster if your not careful) and then bussing in a touch of almost inaudible verb for bigness.

That's pretty much it for this deal. Thanks for asking.

I like the drive of the guitars but a bit more low end thump to the chest would be great. Don't afraid to bring out the kick/snare more. The vocals are in your face and grab your attention. Really cool tune. I'd like to hear more.

On a personal note, the songs rocks nice and hard until the guitar lead. I was expecting something more exciting...that was a bit lame. It was a downer because the rest sounded so good.

Thanks Pericles,

I appreciate the comments. The little lead parts were really just for accent and not intended as the focus of the bridge but i understand your point. When i have time i will revise this mix but in the meantime i love the comments and constructive critiques.... very helpful.

Thanks a lot!

great mix, really good vocal.. i agree that the dums could come up, mostly kik and snare ( i like the toms!).. Not crazy about the "hollow"ish snare that comes in on the last down beat (of 2 bars) on the verse and more in the chorus. I like the thicker snare of the intro, and still it could be a little heavier. it's also relative to the guitars which are pretty loud (but nice). I listened on 8040 gen's which are pretty bright to my ears, and i didn't think it was too bright, but more lacking low end. Also, although i like the vocal, i think it could either be more present and 3D, or just the opposite and more compressed, right now its nice but kind of right between (does that make any sense??) . I only say that because i like the voice and would like to feel it more... Just an opinion, and i'm no rock expert. One of the nicer mixes i've heard on this forum, good job

I like everything and all the comments above seem on target to me. The only thing that hasn't been mentioned is the snare reverb. Sounds like it's too loud in the mix. I think the decay and tone are just right, but I'd bring down the level of the 'verb a little.

Well, I just heard the 2nd version with a change in the snare sound. I liked the pitch of the previous snare better. This one sounds replaced and flat. If you go with this new snare, I suggest bringing back more of the original snare sound and tucking this one under it. About 65% original, 35% this one. And now the reverb is too low IMHO.

Thanks Guys,

I really appreciate you all taking the time to help me out.
Jax, the snare is almost bone dry.... you may be hearing the
decay in the actual sample. The original snare is a metal gretch
that I am NOT in love with. It's very ringy and doesn't gate well.
I've eq'd it many different ways... just not happy with it.
Oh well... mabye I'll find a better sample. We'll see.

Ha Ha! That's actually pretty much the balance of the snares on the first mix.
So mabye just less verb in the sn. configuration of the first mix?

Keep it coming guys and gals.

I think it sounds great! Good job! thumbsup

I didn't listen to the original file, just the new one...

The snare sounds too artificial to me. I'd like it to be a little deeper and full bodied...it sounds too "bottom mic"-y to me (although it cuts thru the mix well.)

Also, I'd like the for the toms to be more of a factor in the mix. Although I'm not in love with the sound of them, the fill around 3:05 is how I want to hear the toms during the choruses. Especially since the vocals take a little dip there during each chorus, I'd like to hear the toms become more of the "frontman" there.

I'm not really distinguishing the bass guitar, but that's fine, I don't need to. I think it's mixed very well.

That's it for me. I think you nailed it! The band must be very happy!

Thanks Alex,

Good comments and feedback. Yes the band was happy 4 mixes ago... this is more for my homework and sharpening skills through all your great help here at GS.

Alex I've had some others want more toms too so your not alone. I'm gonna take it all in and do one more mix tommorrow so everybody throw it at me. Lovin' it.

Peace

Gotta agree, where are the toms? What I hear of them sounds good, which makes me want to hear more of them. The guitars really rock and the vocals have an in your face presence for the tune, great job. You have any more?
