| Mid price mastering in London Can anyone recommend a mid-price (£40-50 ph) mastering place in London/ All the name ones are £150+ ph, and the cheap ones I've come across are charlatans with a finalizer.... For independent acoustic production - piano, bass, drums, vocals kind of Randy Newman/mose allison thing. Some rough tracks can be heard at http://www.myspace.com/theat3 if that's any help. Nick |

| That's all fine guys but let's keep in the right place, the Test forum, rather than the main general discussion place

| There are a whole host of well established places in your price range. Hilton Grove is one that comes to mind that hasn't been mentioned yet. Cheers James. |

| Apologies if I posted in the wrong place - I thought I'd posted in the mastering forum..... what exactly is the test forum testing? Anyway, thanks for the PMs. re online mastering - didn't really want to go there. would prefer an attended session, as I really don't want this record to go too loud. louder than it is, yes, but NOT as loud as it can possibly go. There is no dialectic in on-line mastering, you get what you're given.... I would prefere to be able to influence the process, engage in dialogue about it and learn something! Nick |

| Moderator | try Brad Blackwood at euphonic masters (www.euphonicmasters.com), he IS very interactive in his online sessions and is a very decent guy to deal with on any level!

You probably won't get an attended session in the UK for 40 or 50 pounds/hour at a studio that's half decent. The price you quoted in the original post was closer, maybe more around the £100 mark per hour. Second, following up on Toolskid's post, most (if not all) mastering (online or not) services are very receptive to comments, feedback and even dare I say it, constructive criticism, the dreaded C word. From a personal perspective, the job isn't finished until the client is 100% happy with the job, I can't speak for all studios but I'm sure that this is the general mentality with mastering houses around the world, it's not a matter of getting the job out of the door as fast as possible, but of getting the job right - otherwise where's the job satisfaction? I've found that BETTER results are possible when the client hears the master and comments from the familiarity of their room. In my room it's all new, so they may be slightly off on what they think they want, or they may be wowed by my speakers.

that is not true i do most of my masters through internet e-mail, and actually speak to the customer on the telephone on occasions. in fact one of the last masters i did i spent more time on the phone talking to the client about his mixes and the master rather than actually doing the master itself. | |
