That's how we do it here.

So when are you coming out to the country?

Me?

I would love to make the trek.

But the only way i will attend a mastering session these days is if:

A) I am the producer

or

B) the client pays me to attend

I was speaking in general for first time clients. Its great to hear that you are not charging 2 different rates. But you are probably the exception not the norm.

P.S. Wait a minute you are in Ohio right?

What is there to do or see over there?

Here we charge the same regardless of whether the client is in attendance or not. I suspect some MEs charge for attended as they may take longer with clients asking questions or making certain requests for one thing or another (which they are perfectly entitled to).

I agree with Thrill that it's great for 1st timers especially to see and hear what goes on. The more they understand what can and (more importantly) can't be achieved in mastering, the better quality mixes will ultimately be achieved and therefore finished product.

What do you like to do? We're pretty well stocked in the quality-of-life category. As compared to the rest of America we have everything except an entertainment industry hub and a beach. But the cost of living is low enough that you can commute to both, and many do!

When it comes to the good ol USA i've really only enjoyed the usuals: NYC, Miami, Cali and Las Vegas.

So when it comes to every city in between its like a toss up.

Ok here's the link to the PHP script .....

http://phpatm.free.fr/

version 1.3 still some trouble in user-separation ..
version 1.2 is working for me ....

I'm working on version 1.3 to get it where I want it ...

Still some hard work to edit/config ... but you can get it to work ..

We charge by the hour, same rate whether attended or not. Never understood the whole 'charge more because it takes longer when attended' thing - if you charge the same hourly rate and it takes longer - you do the math. I think an elevated rate for attended sessions is purely to try to make people avoid attending - what would a facility that does that be trying to hide?

I'll make the new PHP script version 1.3 ready for a masteringstudio this week ... and will put it up somewhere for download for who is interested ...

Brad, I know you're equiped well ... but just wanted to point out .. that the programm is not the only thing you need ....

but hosting at 127.0.0.1 with 10Mb up/download and a inter-network running Gigabit is tempting ... :-)

Brad, funny thing ... two years ago on the PSW forum ... I asked for advice on starting a masteringstudio ... after working with plug-ins and the focusrite mixmaster .... your advice was also a nseq-2 ..... I orded one of those through a friend/dutch dealer ..... and guess who's name was on the box/sender ....... yes .. Brad Blackwood ...

Greetings Wim

I don't know about most mastering houses, but we don't charge extra for attended and I bristle at the concept of penalizing an engineer/producer for wanting to attend his session. But inevitably, the whole process of communicating takes more time. I've almost never had a client be the proverbial "fly on the wall." So attended sessions end up costing an extra hour or two more than unattended. So there's no need to charge extra for attended, it's not fair.

We do try to defuse the sting by giving some free time at the head to get acquainted, listen to some reference recordings off the clock, etc.

Dear Wim:

That would be great. I'd love to see your PHP script. Thanks in advance!

Best wishes,

I've been doing flat rates & FTP delivery since '02. I like to set up FTP accounts for clients as they come, I don't use special software for this, I just go through my hosting company's control panel. I can add/delete FTP accounts and assign/change passwords. I use Core FTP as my program to download files, and recommend "Monkey's Audio" as a file compressor program (Windows only) to my clients. I've never had any problems! (with any of my windows-using clients. Mac's a different story, lol).

I totally understand those who want to sit in on sessions with mastering engineers, but they should also understand that an hourly fee is appropriate. Flat rates work great if the client knows the ME and knows their quality of work.
