My band is looking for a great ME to master our EP!

Dear Gearslutz,

My band, Blu Avenue, is looking for a great ME to master our upcoming 7 song EP. We are had a studio in charlotte do our tracking and we are in the process of recording the vocals and mixing and so far we are very pleased with the results. Now we are looking ahead to find someone to Master it.

We are all huge fans Karnivool and Porcupine Tree and love the clarity and feel of their songs. That being said Tom Coyne, who did Karnivool's Sound Awake album (If you haven't listened to it you have no idea what your missing ) might be a little bit out of our price range. Though, we sent an email for a quote just to check .

I was wondering if anyone on here has any recommendations or any advice? From the research I've done, mastering can make or break an album so we want to make sure we find a great ME.

For those wondering, we have the guitar sounds of karnivool, mixed with the drums of Porcupine Tree and the vocals of Incubus. All in all we are looking for someone who can make our songs tell more of a story then just making an album. Thanks everyone who can help!

What's your budget? Are you mixing yourself? If not, who is? Are they up to the task etc etc

The results of the master WILL depend on the mix itself. But why not go for the guy you like? Make th eenquiry!!

Personally? I use Soundmasters (london) all the time. They are fabulous.

Budget is 1500ish, More or less on the quality and experience of the person doing the mastering.

We are having a local studio finish our mixing so they will be in good shape.

We are a very clean band and all well versed in what we do. We also pride ourselves on how clean we are live and want to keep that raw but good clarity sound to the final product.

We also know how we want the record to sound and are aware a good mix=good master, though we are more concerned over the background of the person doing the mastering. We don't want someone versed in a different genre or someone not familiar with the sound we want to achieve master it.

And thanks I'll check out that studio!

Make the enquiry with Tom Coyne. Although your budget isn't huge (dollars I assume?) you never know. I've certainly paid that sort of money for major ME before..... give it a go!

Go see Dave Harris at Studio B Mastering. He's right there in Charlotte, he's a good guy, and you'll learn a ton about your mixes and the mastering process by sitting in on the session.
