Usually, there's a reason why some are rather pricey.

That being said - Having a budget in mind might at least get you a few PM's...

Give these guys a call

Check out

Northeastern Digital

Airshow (the Boulder Studio)

These two companies have worked with The Greatful Dead, Otis Taylor, Herbie Hancock, The Beach Boys, David Bowie, Bela Fleck, Bob Marley, Ringo Starr, and the list goes on, and on, and on.

I'm not quite sure of their pricing, but looking into it would be worth it.

I recommend Brad Blackwood at Euphonic Masters or Gene Grimaldi at Oasis Mastering. Both have don't great work for me on a less than "Big Bass" budget.

Dave Collins in LA has done some HUGE stuff. he is a great guy to work with also, highly recomended.

The great thing about him is that he left A&M a few years back and does his own thing now. This means that his prices are a fraction of a lot of the big boys, yet he IS a big boy.

Check his website out at http://www.collinsaudio.com/

I did a project last year with him and everyone was very happy. And if you need some touch ups later he is great to work with and very fast getting your product back to you.

Best of luck

Not only has Dave been at A&M but he also cut some killer rekkids at Marcussen Mastering for some time before he started his own facility .

Few have the pedigree that DC has and I totally concur with your post.

There are a lot of good ME's to choose from. I think it'd be smart, once your choices are narrowed to go to www.allmusic.com and look up the credits of the guys or gals you're thinking of using. If you're doing hip hop it would make sense to hire someone that has some experience with the genre. Good mastering engineers can handle just about anything you throw at them, but all else being equal I'd go with someone with the right track record [pun intended].

I highly recommend either Jeff Lowe at OTR Mastering in Dallas or Bill Roberts in Florida...I have heard the works of both, and they smoke just about anyone else (brand name or no) I've heard in many years...

mmmmm this is always a tough one for me because we sell acoustics to all of these guys, but I just got back some work from John at Massive Mastering and was pretty blown away by his work. Not only the end product, but the way he worked with me through out the project. A+++++ for John

I though LC was more like $150 a song?

Even posted on their site... or at least Phil's.... plus I've gotten quoted from them.

Just to clear it up

Cool,

I like his taste in monitoring (I'm on the slightly smaller 1.6QR's, my room's too small for the 3.6's).

Thank you for that, Jason!

Yes, that post pissed me off bigtime.

Drastic Mastering was brokering jobs for my previous assistant.

Work was being done after hours in my studio for a lesser charge - but not by me.
