Looking for the right mastering engineer

I'm in a psychedelic reggae project now and the band has their heart set on using one of the heavy hitters in Hollywood to master the record (The Guitarist has a "hookup").

I personally would like to go elsewhere (because I don't want a smashed, over-compressed record)

Does anyone know of any solid mastering engineers that would do a short free sample, so I can bring something to the table & hopefully convince the guys that we don't need our record smashed?

My only notes to the mastering engineer would be: Full sound, Big Bottom, and Plenty of dynamics. NO SQUARE WAVES!

nobody decent is giving you free samples of your stuff.
most good ones have samples on their web.
check out bob katz. his approach matches yours.

Conveying those thoughts to any decent mastering engineer should avoid the squashing pretty effectively I'd think. Why try to reinvent the wheel? Mastering engineers provide a service - they're not sonic dictators out to destroy your music.

I smash the hell out of records when asked - I also do an audiophile series where no compression is used at all - and I'm in Hollywood, go figure.
