Thread Starter | Hey people, i think we should finish this publication, we liked 3 masters of those which were sent in, for now the user Peer is the leader and we think we will go with him. Thanks to everyone, almost 70% of the masters are great, but this is a very subjective thing you know!! Music is the air, who can measure it. Thanks. Hello! We need some creative mastering of 11 songs. Our budget is limited, it is a non-commercial project, but just because of this we would like to like the final mastering. Music is our BELOVED hobby.. The budget is 350$ and a BIG thank you and all you wish, if it is not about money. If you wish to do this mastering, you can master half of this song in accordance with our comments: http://alturl.com/nkyck and PM me with a link to it (well you can master the whole song as well). We will listen to it and compare with the mastering we already have (and do not like) and maybe compare variants sent to us, and write back to you if it is ok and we should proceed. Here are all the comments: http://alturl.com/urew7 [/SIZE] |

Also we would like that those master the test track had some experience in mastering.. Well, mastering is such a thing that to master an album you should have mastered several albums in the past. Even mixing can have some improvisation to it but mastering is something stricter to our mind. |

We will listen to it and compare with the mastering we already have (and do not like) and maybe compare variants sent to us, and write back to you if it is ok and we should proceed. General mastering comments: - we would prefer analog gear for the mastering, as analog compressors, limiters and equalizers. although what is more important is the result of course. but the result should be as far from the digital flavour as possible. - the mix picture should not be altered much, although the apparent problems should be solved. for example, in some songs you will want to cut the sub low freqs. - a good tool of working separately with stereo and mono parts of the signal should be used, sometimes there is a need to lower the level of voice considerably. - good separation of the sounds, analog warmth of the sound should be achieved (or not lost, because the analog console gives this to the sound) - the mixes were made digitally and then summed up through an analog console remotely, with the engineer adjusting the balance by ear with the reference mix, so some slight problems like lower loudness of the kick may occur. - 70% of the times the songs will be heard is separately, so no need to fight to much for the sonic equality, on the contrary, we would ask you to underline the "self" of the song, or solve some "personal" problems of the song, even if in the row of the songs it might sound a bit differently. but yes, to some extent some sonic equality should be achieved, but this is not the main goal. one should not jump in the air when the next song begins to play, nothing more. but each song should have its own color. - the highs of the overheads and high hat have been cut a bit, no need to make them higher. in some songs the highs should be left softer, in some higher, no need to make them equal in each of the songs. - the quantity (subjective) of bass yes, should be made more or less equal. - the volumes too, should be subjectively equal. - the songs should be rather loud but not too much compressed, but should be rather loud, although loudness here is not so important as the punchiness, the edginess. - in almost all of the songs the kick should be made more obvious. Song-specific mastering comments: 1) Perfect combination - the voice should be be put a bit more inside the mix, but just a bit, maybe this will happen after the compression without doing anything else. 2) Alone in the city - the kick should be made more obvious and punchy for the mix to stand firmer on the legs. 3) Animal soul - the kick should be made more obvious and punchy 4) Just to be ok - the kick should be made more obvious and punchy 5) So sorry - the kick should be made more obvious and punchy 6) Like you like me - the voice should be lowered rather considerably in the mix, should be more inside of the mix, not in front of it, should be more "lost" among the chaos of the stereo guitars - a bit more compression can be used in this song to make it a bit "crazier" 7) Try love - the voice should be lowered a bit in the mix - the kick should be made more obvious and punchy 8) She's fantastic - the voice should be lowered in the mix, be put more inside the mix 9) Who knows - should be transparent, not overcompressed. 10) You're my helicopter - kick should be made more obvious - the voice should be a bit more inside the mix 11) Just another lullaby There are no special comments on this song.' ________________________________________________________________________ that's a copy from your web, which I'd like to comment to give you some directions 1. you clearly didn't finish the mix and want to address issues during mastering process - WRONG, get back to mix and make the kick punch and lower/compress the vocals for your liking 2. using analog processors doesn't give you warmth necessary, it could be done digitally, you definitely misinterpret ANALOG DOMAIN thinking it's a cure for a digital - it's not read your notes again and get back to mix to address issues, when it's done and you are happy with mix- get an ME good luck

Hi! Well there is an item among those you reposted saying that the sum was made remotely, trying to copy the reference digital master. If we had the ssl or neve in the whole country where we live we would clearly be present at the summing, but unfortunately it is impossible. The engineer tried his best and to 98% it copies the mix but surely there may occur something but not very critical. It can be solved in mastering to some extent. If not, it does not kill the mix anyhow, just that personally i would prefer to tweak a bit as the author of the songs, arranger, bass player and voice haha ( please don't tell me the mix should be done by someone else, i know, but i LOVE to mix!! It is even more pleasant than composing |

but it doesn't change a point - you are addressing issues which needs be done in the mix, If it's not possible to re-mix it, that's happen a lot actually, and for many different reasons; If I understand correctly you 'recreated' a mixing process on a desk ? am I wrong ? if yes, I'd be interested in listening of both version - digital and after high end desk. | |

No, it was totally mixed digitally and then only summed analogically, i mean all the pans, effects, eqs, etc were made digitally and mixed down to 32 mono tracks some of which were split stereo. So the engineer only had to open the faders and everything should sound the same but unfortunately digital is mathematics and analog is poetics or something, so some slight differences in balance appeared.

Nice tune, and well recorded. I'll give it a go. I just finished 3 or so back to back mastering gigs, so I'm in that space right now. DP |
